Is it rude to post a price if...

The dealer gave you a discount and it is clear for one reason or another who the dealer was? The idea being that you are advertising a potential haggling storm for that dealer?

  • Discussion of prices/costs in general is in bad taste as a life lesson, I see no reason why it shouldn't apply to coins be it on the buy or sell side.

I generally feel that way but the whole price guide element of the hobby along with the auction archive abilities of ebay and the other houses it almost feels like an obligation too to report where the market is at for certain things. I know for example I have wondered what certain coins have been bought for so I know how to place value on a similar item I might want. Its a weird greyish area in my mind.

That is why these resources exist; to help collectors stay informed. However on a public forum I'm sure there are people who would like this to remain confidential. But it isn't hard to find a ballpark figure using these methods.

It depends on if you want a good relationship with that dealer in the future. You might not get such a nice offer the next time. image

I'm in a stock investing forum and we talk about our winners. But we refer to it in a broad range based on what you could buy. Like, I made a killing on XYZ stock and got vacation money on it. Or, I only made Dinner money. Or, I lost some Taco Bell money. That works as a good compromise.
  • I wouldn't. Be happy with the discount, and hope he gives you another one in the future. I guess there would be nothing wrong with starting a newp thread with a photo and credit the dealer. Great coin, great price wouldn't be out of line, I don't think.
Let's try not to get upset.
  • Well for the record I did not post the price of the coin that sparked this question in my mind.

Why would you need to disclose the information? There seems to be no upside.

  • I feel quoting exact prices is not a proper thng to do but to imply or say that a dealer or
anyone gave you a good deal or a fair price is proper. Some one may have just purchased
the same item or something close and may feel you got a better deal and cause hard feelings
toward the person you dealt with. Peace & Harmony are two wonderful things to enjoy on our
    paths of life.
  • I would imagine if the coin was won on eBay or at an auction it would be OK.
