Over-graded? A lesson in buying the card, not the slab! Review Update...

Hello folks,

I'm about to embark on a quest to get, in my opinion, a grossly over-graded card out of it's current slab and into one that is more appropriate and maybe get a little something for my troubles. Now I have to admit I fell "victim" to buying this slab and not the card in my effort to complete my Jim Brown basic registry set in all 8s. I have submitted three of these over the years with similar or better centering that I thought had a shot at an 8. All three came back 7s! As a collector of Jimmy cards I didn't mind the extras, but the search for my last 8 continued. I know the '66s are known for their bad card stock and PSA does seem to be lenient to some degree on their grading of this year but as you are about to see I think they pushed it a little too far on this one.

As shown below (my scan, 100dpi) at first glance it looks like a nice card, maybe a little OC but nothing stands out to me.

I was very disappointed in the card when I first got it (it's been awhile ago) but I finished my set!!!!!

This is what I saw when I got it... (1200 dpi scans)

Not one of those corners belongs on an PSA 8. To me those corners put this is a PSA 5 slab (maybe even a 4!)

I have since replaced this card in my set with another 8 that I'm proud to own.

I have checked the slab and it doesn't appear to be tampered with so I'm going to send it in for review this week and see what happens! image

What do you guys think PSA will do upon reviewing this card?

Scott

    .
  • Since PSA stands behind their grades, what would happen if this slab was presented to PSA at a show?
(asking for a reason, as i have a card that i feel is waaaay overgraded, and im going to a show they'll be at on Friday)

They regrade it, and refund you the difference via vouchers/cash back....

Did you buy this sight unseen? In any case, good luck on your quest! What are you hoping to get for your troubles?

Edited to ask: Wait, your troubles are your card is over-graded? Wow. My prayers are with you.

I collect this issue. I've seen corners like that before in 8 holders, although
never all four corners that looked that bad. Usually you might get
one corner that looks to be frayed, and the others are okay for the grade.
To me, it looks like it might be a 5 or 6 on a review.

I think it's always best to handle these type of issues in person at a card show.
You need to speak with the PSA operations manager. I don't know his name, as
the previous guy who held that position is no longer with PSA.

As Bobby said, PSA will more than likely put the card in it's proper holder
and pay you the difference with a check or in grading vouchers. You might
need to prove to PSA how much you did pay for the card. VCP would help.
Otherwise they might look at the SMR and give you that amount less the current
    new grade of the card.

Another solution would be to stop looking at your corners under 1200dpi magnification.

I agree kb, sometimes this gets entirely too anal. That Jim Brown card is beautiful! Nice gloss, good display, centering is nice. Maybe a bit overgraded.

I'd like to see another 1966 Philadelphia PSA 8 card under 1200dpi magnification for comparison.

    Isn't that PSA's job?

Got just word that this has been bump DOWN to a PSA 6! Probably about right for this particular issue.

Nice to see that you did the right thing instead of passing it off on someone else.
  • On the opposite end of the spectrum, a couple of weeks ago I won a 1956 Roberto Clemente that was graded PSA 3 dirt cheap. IMO the card was way under-graded. I believe the grade scared a lot of people away. Seller would have been better off selling it as a raw card.

I was just looking at another on ebay and it - too - looks potentially over-graded.

I would imagine most sellers would tell you to take it up with PSA?

    I agree - your card is over-graded - I have a 33G card with similar corners - it looks good from afar - in a 5 holder.

I recommend you crack the PSA 6 when it comes back and resub it for a potential 7. It's funny but it is likely.

But seriously, did you send it in for a review with no other communication to PSA and they downgraded it to a 6? I didn't realize that when I sent my cards in for a bump they could come back two grades lower.

No, I did include a note on the submission form that stated my reasons for sending the card in for review and specifically mentioned that I thought the card was over-graded.

Glad PSA did the right thing and downgraded your Jim Brown card.
Having weak looking 8's floating around the hobby is not a good
thing and weaken's the TPGers reps and buyers trust in what they do.

Did PSA settle up with you with some vouchers for the diff. in value
from going from an 8 to a 6? Usually that's how they handle it. That's
pretty fair, especially if you send in a lot of cards for grading and you'll
use them up on a future sub.

Dude's got every right to examine the corners on PSA cards he buys to make sure they fit the grade. Hopefully PSA did the right thing and made up for the difference.

Yes they did, I opted for a voucher for the difference.

Glad it worked out for you.

The 66 brown for some reason is nearly always oc. If and when u find a crisp centered example expect to pay a premium.
