Anyone Ever See 1 of These Before - 1971 Topps Rack Pack Mixed Series 2/3/4

[l]http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310349712107&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123[/l]

And showing 3 HOFers? Yellow flags are waving.

Any opinions on if this came from Topps this way or if it was assembled after the factory?

NOTE: It's also priced well above the current market assuming it is legit.

I believe that pack was sold through heritage a few years ago, purchased by a board member and flipped on ebay within a week or so for a nice profit. then again I may just be crazy

  • I know the modern pack collectors widely accept the regular card header concept, i have my doubts, in the last 12-15 years i've been offer some in trade
by local collectors, and even know the offers appear to be in my favor i turned them all down!! my reason is simple i've started collecting/dealing seriously
in 1969 and have been to thousands of shows both as a buyer and seller all over the country til 1996 when my wife past of cancer, cause of that i was
away from the hobby for 2 years and in those 27 years i never saw one!! when i came back to the hobby in 1998 it was on line yahoo auctions and ebay
then i saw not only the first one but quite a few i don't discard the possibility that by a freak accident it might off happened i,2,3, times which would
explain why i never saw one all those years but it seems that almost every single one that pops now is one of those freaks and the one thing they all
have in common is a hand punched hole or an officce puncher hole not the legit factory cross which was the final factory step.

    Impressive memory.

In checking Heritage Ts&Cs it appears that an item like this does not necessarily get authenticated before being auctioned. It is only
if the winning bidder challenges the autheticity that they seem to act.

It very well may be a legitimate pack, but you know what is said about things that seem too good to be true....this pack could really use
the blessing of a recognized authenticator.

I respect Jose's knowledge of the "unopened world". Has anyone ever asked Steve about his opinion of these racks? Personally I think they look better with the header card. I have NO IDEA which ones are legit.

I'm with StarPax. I bought a lot of '70 and '71 rack packs when I was a kid and at least in L.A. we never had regular cards for headers- always the yellow ad header.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Jose raises an interesting point and I tend to agree with him, even though I've seen these racks sold by very reputable dealers. I also recall a 73 rack with Evans RC on top that also had a regular card as the header card. I've never seen any other year with that. I'd personally prefer a 71 rack with the yellow header card and the 54-card count. The card count with the regular card as the header card is also fewer than 54 cards, IIRC..

Edit to add: Interesting also to see the hammer price with buyer's premium was less than half of the BIN price, though it was 3 years ago. Duncan, do you recall what it sold for when it was flipped on ebay?

I also have my doubts about the card header. Its as if he didnt have a tag so he just used what he had, just another card for it. Thats how I see it.

My experience with 71 raks is the first series raks usually have a card as the header and every series after the first has the yellow header card. John

PS The 2nd & 3rd series were combined for raks and they usually will have 2 2nd series sections and one 3rd

Actually this rack is a mix of series 3 and 4 (I originally thought Morgan was the end of series 2, but he actually is the start of series 3).

So far the yellow flags include:

    1) Header card
    2) Mixed series rack with series not normally seen together
    3) 3 HOFers showing
    4) No source of authentication

anything else that needs to be added to the list?

We also know that this pack was once sold by Heritage for less than 1/2 the current BIN price on Ebay.

What an uncluttered mind, I can vividly remember a card being in the header for 71's BUT NOT with mixed series, at least not on Long Island.
