  • For me it's easy, 1976 Topps Lou Gehrig. I've always loved the way the Sporting News Sub Set looks. The Gehrig is one of my favorite poses.

The Sub set looks so good, I put the 10 card sub set #341-350 together all in PSA 9.

    75 Bench

73 Clemente is 2nd......probably the best photo Topps took given his death, the shadowy, haunting photo of Roberto at the plate.

easy. 1970 Topps Football #90. Orenthal James Simpson. still one of the most iconic pieces of cardboard ever to grace our notebooks. in spite of him.

btw, i shredded my '70 Topps baseball set to bits and i can't find anyone named Riggie. image

    '71 Munson
  • I really do like that 71 Munson as well. Great picture of him in action.

My favorite would have to be this 1973 Roberto Clemente. He was already gone before this came out but Topps still decided to follow through with this card - Probably because they had them printed out already. The 1972 Clemente is a really cool card too

As a kid in the 70s, the only baseball I cared about were cards of Reggie Jackson, Jim Palmer and Rod Carew. I guess I didn't know or care much about rookie cards back then! image

Both the 75 and 77 Brett. He used to model his stance after Carl Yaz, bat held upright. And even though Charley Lau started working with him everyday after the all star break in 74, Brett's 75 card still depicts the early stance. The 77card shows the stance that helped turn him into a great hitter.

I surprised no one has mentioned any of the 1972 Topps "In Action" cards yet. There were a number of these that were great, for example:

    Bench IA
    Mays IA
    Clemente IA
    Killebrew IA
    Aparicio IA

and those were just some of the stars. The lesser known common player IA cards had some truly remarkable game shots.

71 Munson, Ryan and Brooks Robinson (#300 and the WS card with the diving stab) are amongst some of my favorites too.

And then there's that 1976 bubble gum blowing contest card too....

The 1974 and 1978 Reggie Jackson cards had great photos of his swing.

Mike Schmidt, unfortunately, had pretty lousy photos in the 70's.

Carlton had a couple of nice action shots and, IIRC, the 73 showed one of the 13 times Tim McCarver congratulated him after one of his home complete game victories (24 total!!!!) in 1972.

The '73 Clemente: Is that a spring training game or a VERY early start at Shea?

Especially 78. Looking at that card always made me feel embarrassed for Schmitty for some reason.

Not as bad as the spring training shots used for much of the 1982 cards and stickers.

I remember the joke was that larry Bowa said something to the effect, "His face was on fire and they put it out with his spikes."

Schmidt is, by far, my favorite player.

I started collecting in 1973, so I always favor them over most other years. My 2 favorite cards from 73 are the Bench and the Clemente. (I also like the 71 Clemente.)

My least favorite is the 73 Reggie Jackson...I have always disliked the pose Topps used, it looks like a pitchers pose to me.

Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
  • For baseball I'd have to go with the 1971 Topps Nolan Ryan. Something about that action shot with the black borders just screams gorgeous at me. For football I'd pick the 1976 Topps OJ Simpson. He's just standing there like he's the biggest star on the planet. Oh yeah, at that point, he probably was. For basketball it would be the 1975-76 Topps Bob McAdoo. We forget just how great McAdoo was in his prime. But HE was the first team all-star on that card, not Kareem or Cowens. For hockey, it is the 1973 Rick Martin (either Topps in yellow or O-Pee-Chee in green). Martin is sticking his blade into the camera. A forgotten great from the 70's who recently passed way too young.

I've always liked the '70 Topps Bench. Just a classic shot.

    image

For 1971, I like the Vida Blue card. Great action shot (yes, I do believe he just threw a pitch). I also like his printed signature since I also don't know how to write in cursive.

    image

For 1972, I like the Clemente regular card (the in action card where he's throwing his bat down in frustration is pretty good too).

I love that Keith Magnuson card! I really want one signed but he's passed on. I sold this one (a 1/1) for $1000 plus a PSA 9 of the same card...but it's my favorite looking one of the 70's (and I kind of wish I didn't sell it but it was too much $$ to pass up):

The Fidrych was pulled from one of the first few packs I opened as a kid.
The scan is the original card I pulled 35 yrs ago. My Mom saved it for years,
unknown to me, and then I inherited it when she passed just over a year ago.
Honorable mention goes to the '71 Munson.

    Great Munson and 'Bird' card.

Yeah, that '72 Magnuson is a classic.

My fav is this one, it's the first year I started collecting, and of my
    favorite player.
