Catalytic convertor platinum recovery?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
Catalytic convertors are to have a minimum of a 1/4 ounce of platinum, or palladium, or rhodium on the screening in them...

Has anyone done the recovery on their own or found an online scrapper that's paying good money image

I scrap a lot of trucks and cars and if you want to sell cats they have to be intact. Never take the stuff out of them. Different brands of car have cats with different value and once the stuff is out of the shell they will only pay for the lowest value which will be terrible they will assume it came from an aftermarket part . If you look on ebay you will see universal aftermarket replacement cats selling for $40 brand new . The innards from those will net you only 3 or 4$ a pound if that .

I deal in ford trucks and I had been getting $ 50 for smalls ,$65 for mediums and $80 for larges last time I sold was 3 months ago though . Ford catalytic converters contain mostly palladium unfortunately for me foreign brands sell for more if they have better recipes . In 2008 the prices I got for fords were double those numbers maybe even more. They peaked then and have been giving ground steadily ever since.

The person that buys them from you will ID them from the size and shape of the shell, they know all the common flavors by sight . They look in both ends to see if the inside is all there if they cant see they will poke a rod or wire in there and feel around.

It used to be you could type "catalytic" in the search box on craigslist and find 10 competing listings with updated price sheets but it has dried up now I just looked and found none at all. Its better to turn in a truckload so a lot of enterprising fellows turned into vest pocket dealers of cats and acted as middlemen . They would drive around in a pickup and buy groups of 1's and 2's and 10's at a time then turn in a truckload for a better price. Some of them overpaid at the peak and never recovered. It was a dangerous business to be in they would always want to meet in the daytime in busy areas and most of them carried a gun image

Here in California the whole catalytic converter trade has been practically banned here.
  • Hi Broadstruck. I'm a total rookie at this forum stuff but thought this might be the the time for me to chime in. I work for a large automotive recycling facility in the greater Los Angeles area. At our location we recycle about a 100 cars a week and usually have around that many "CATS" to sell each week. We use a middleman that we sell to weekly, and that keeps security to a minimum and can never get ripped off for more than that amount. Right now they sell for anywhere between $9.00 and $225.00. The low being an aftermarket replacement "CAT" and the high being a large european "CAT". Today we sold just over a 100 of them with the average being $53.00. I asked around and no one could seem to tell me where the refinery is, I've heard in the past that there's one in Colorado. From what I understand the refining process involves high heat and acid. Did you know that it against the law to sell a used one unless its being scrapped?
They have also become a popular target for thieves, especially on cars and SUV's that they're easy to access. Some of them come off with 4 bolts. If you have this kind its probably a good idea to have it tack welded to the rest of the exhaust system but not sure if even that's a deterrent. Lot's of thieves use a battery powered sawzall. Anyway hope this information answers some of your questions.
