OT: SOPA....

I don't know how active you guys are on the web, but I haven't seen it brought up here.

I figured I'd give it a post and let you guys make your own decision.

It is pretty much a fast-track government bill that gives private companies the right to censor just about anything on the net that infringes on a copyright - and sue just about as much....

Any site with user generated content will pretty much be shut down...

Pretty relevant current events so I figured I'd give it a post.

IMO everyone should watch this...

Is Krukcards copyrighted? What about Schillito?
    image

  • I don't know if they are copyrighted tbh, but under the act it allows companys to sue collectors universe because of the content their users posted...

It pretty much ruins free speech because you can't so much as mention anything copyrighted or the company can force the website owners to remove it and sue.

I understand your point. But using copyrighted material is vastly different than the right to free speech. You never had the right to use copyrighted material without crediting the creator and possibly paying the creator.

Free speech is protected. And the government will not sue you for posting pictures of cards on this website. But the creator of the cards may if the law changes, yet I do not see that being good for business.

This is really about movies/tv/music. Not trading cards.

I would not loose sleep over it.

You REALLY need to read more about that bill. It doesn't do anything close to blocking sites from MENTIONING content.

  • From what I've picked up... It pretty much allows the government to control any copyrighted material on the net and opens up like 500 different ways for big corporations to sue site owners.... Tell me what I'm mistaking here?

Bking... How is censoring what a blog can post not infringing on free speech?

  • this is indeed interesting

Because is doesn't attempt to censor what a blog can post. It attempt to prevent a blog from providing copyrighted content without permission. BIG difference.

MAJOR support from all over the internet has successfully stifled this bill for now. Now we need to prepare for the next atrocity they try to get passed to try and kill the internet. It won't end until they do the bidding of the mega-corporations that back them. This government sucks.

Yup, not sure how anyone is in support of something that would pretty much destroy the internet.

The argument that it is or isn't a free speech issue is just muddying the actual issue. It was an awful bill that would have ruined the internet regardless of the semantics and we successfully stopped it for now.

In all seriousness, this is why people were/are so up in arms about these bills. It would allow for the record company to take down PSA'S SITE because YOU used an avatar that is a copyrighted image of theirs. THAT'S the insanity we are dealing with with these god-awful bills.

Why SOPA is a very bad idea.

You can legally use copyrighted content or trademarks without permission if your use falls with fair use (e.g., criticism, parody). SOPA, however, is inadequately protective of fair use because of its 5-day notice and take-down procedure, where someone claiming you violated their copyright or trademark doesn't even have to go to court to block your website.

University of Wisconsin has already been sending out takedown demand letters to sellers of baseball cards of Russell Wilson (their QB, who gave up minor league baseball for football). If SOPA passes, they could actually force eBay to ban sellers of Wilson's cards.

Among the primary changes that are being demanded by the White House for support of SOPA is a greatly-improved protection from unjust takedown demands.

  • And then the problem lies in how something is determined "unjust", is one judging going to handle all requests or are judges from every state going to handle them?

There is nothing positive that can come from it.

Not a sheep. Just know the limitations of the proposal and understand the potential applications thereof. However, some will preach that there will be some adulterated version that will infringe upon everyone's right to say or post anything. To those, the sky IS falling, but the train has already left the station.

Because we all know that given a tool of power, the government will always use it wisely and would never do anything to infringe upon our freedoms. I get it though. Some people just trust the government as if they have never abused their power. There will always be gullible people. That's who they pander to.

It still would take a court order to pull down a site. This is about shutting down offshore companies like Limewire that blatantly distribute copyrighted material, not about stopping people posting baseball cards on CU or a record cover on Facebook.
There is a ton of money promoting a disinformation campaign against this bill.

  • Griffins... It effects all of what you just listed regardless of what they intended it for.

But as stated earlier in the thread, it has been stifled for now

Bologna. There is a European country, I can't recall which one right now (maybe Sweden or Finland?), that recently started a law JUST like this. It was meant to be for the exact reasons you stated. It's a god damn mess already with sites being shut down by judges simply doing the bidding of big corporations. It's already doing everything it said it wouldn't do and more. You can't ever trust the government to do the right thing. This is why these things matter. The more power you allow them, the worse things get for us.

    + 1

Sean ~ I suggest you do more research on SOPA prior to posting more talking points. It isn't "pretty much" anything; it's a complex legal issue that cannot be articulated in 4:20 video. Sure, it's great for fearmongering and appeals to the ADD generation but completely fails at straight facts.
