Ugh, holiday today. Will PO accept 1/16 label tomorrow?

Just realized today is Martin Luther King day. I already printed (paypal) labels for shipment today
over the weekend. Will the PO still accept them tomorrow or do I have to re-do everything?

    They will accept it tomorrow....
  • Bobby, are you positive or just speculating?

From my experience, they might refuse it if they see it. My suggestion would be to go put it in a box at the PO today and you should be OK. Or, if not, just dont put it directly in anyone hands tommorrow.

  • They will accept it tomorrow, I have done this 10-15 times with no issues. Just recently I printed labels out for packages to be shipped on a Saturday, and did not make it to the PO. I took them in on monday, no issues whatsoever.

    Morning,

I'm not sure I follow what the issue is here? I do this every weekend, never heard a peep from anybody and drop off at counter to three different Post Offices on Mondays, or Tues. if there's a Holiday?

  • I was going to go ahead and try to dump them in the depository slot, which I think I'll still do,
but sometimes it's locked. This is the one for larger envelopes. I have 2 large boxes that won't fit
in it, and there's a gigantic depository slot for the automated machine that was never fixed, so I'll have to
go back tomorrow for those 2. That thing has been broken for almost 3 yrs and they never fixed it.
  • Spoke with 2 different source at USPS.
They said it needs to be shipped on the date that it's showing.

That is BS......I accidentally left a package in my car....got shipped out a couple days after the date......it made it out to the customer.

I also do the labels for the group subs, and they don't always go out the date on the label. The date just shows when you paid for the label - it doesn't have to be the exact mailing date!!!!

    BullPucky,

So that means the 1000 or so packages that I've printed out on Sat/Sun and shipped on Mon/Tues have all been shipped illegally?? OK then just call me an OutLaw...Cause I'll continue to be doing exactly the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

90% of the Ebay packages I get show a "label printed" a day or so before the package actually hits the P.O.

Most sellers that I know print their labels at night, then mail the next day.

Usually the Airport post office stays open for extended hours, but not sure what they do on holidays like MLK day. Call your
local airport PO and see if they are open today. If so you could drop it off there today (assuming its not too far)

    Good luck

I think someone is pulling Eagle Eyes chain.....this isn't rocket science. It does NOT have to be the exact mailing date. Put it this way - you only have 48 hours to void a label. If I prepay a label and leave it in my car - 48 hours pass - there is NO WAY IN HELL I am paying for another label. The post office already has my money for mailing out the package - it is going into their postal stream, whether the date matches or not!
  • I've never had an issue with shipping even multiple days after it's paid... Because simply it's paid.

I'm sorry to hear they are giving you problems.

    Give 'em hell.
  • I'm anal, and don't want my packages getting returned.
I just made a quick dash to the PO and the depository slot was kind of full,
but I did manage to get my bubble mailers in there (all 14 of them).
I'm going to just void the labels for the 2 large boxes I have and reprint them
for tomorrow. Better 2 then 16.
  • I had this happen a couple weeks ago. I bought postage at the post office after hours. Turned around to get boxes and they were out. I came back the next day and they were still out. So I went to another post office and used the boxes from that post office. then I threw them into the slot there. Next day, different post office. Three packages. All delivered. All got me positive feedback.

Yeah, but you can choose the day that you're shipping.

The airport post office in Columbus Ohio is open today (was just there on my way to a flight) so that seems
to be a valid option if you are concerned and you live near your airport post office

There are some very anal postal employees that live by the rulebook. Officially, it is supposed to be mailed the day it's printed and some tellers will turn you away. I always mail my stuff from work the day after printing the label and never had a problem. It's when you have to deal with some gung-ho postal teller in person that they can turn the package away

Bryan, I held my BGS sub 3 days before I mailed it. I even handed it to the guy at the po counter. He looked at it and just put it in the pile.

Probably depends on whether or not the postal employee is in a bad mood if he's gonna raise a stink about it.

Although, usually when po employees get in a bad mood, they just bring a rifle to work and waste everyone.

    You should be ok.

Aren't you able to select the mailing date when printing the postage? You can if you print postage with ebay/Paypal.
  • zep33zep33 Posts: 6,897 ✭✭✭
you can but I don't bother changing it

I think it only crossed my mind one time while in the middle of printing them. I might have done it that time but I just zip right through and don't even think about it

Yes, I printed them all out on Saturday evening and set them for today. I didn't know today was a holiday.

If you actually ask them, they will tell you that, but no one is going to reject your package if you drop it off a day late. Even on the USPS site, it says that the date the label is printed does not necessarily mean that the package is in the postal system. Heck, packages sit around now in sorting facility for days with no updates, so I wouldn't worry about something as minor as this.

  • My postal rep told me that if I am unable to ship on the date on the label then I should cross out the late on the printed label and write in the correct date. I've tried it both ways. Crossed out and written in a new date or just shipped the packages. Never had a single issue. Ever.

Color me confused, but why would anyone use the time-saving ability to print labels in advance and THEN waste time interacting with a postal clerk at all?

I asked the post master a couple of years ago at my local post office about the mail dates on those. While technically you are suppose to mail it when you print it, it shouldn't be a problem. She said if you make it out a day early and then mail it the next day or so, it makes them look like they are slow on mailing it. Makes no sense to me but I get what she is saying. Maybe the higher ups take a look at delivery time ever now and again.... Who knows... But you should be fine

To get the SCAN form in the system so the items show as received by the Post Office... it's proof of mailing not just proof you created a label... it gives buyers a bit more information and peace of mind if they are tracking the package or concerned about time in transit.

It also gives sellers who are using insurance proof of acceptance and will validate a claim if it became necessary. Without acceptance, anyone could print a $500 insured label, send nothing, and claim the package was lost in the system. The USPS won't honor insurance that hasn't been scanned into the system.

Wow, this is way more complicated than it needs to be.

Simply VOID the label (you'll get credit) and print a new one tomorrow or with the correct shipping date.

PS. Are you sure the date on the label actually says 1/16? Usually the label will default to the next USPS working day. At least it does when using Stamps.com

PPS. Around where I ship I never have had a problem with labels and "stale" dates. Officially, they aren't supposed to take them but I've only had one of thousands shipped actually returned for a stale date.

One other postal tip that my be of help. I usually have a USPS tub or two of stuff to ship, all with labels printed through Stamps.com. I know that the last truck comes to the main post office I ship from after 6pm. I drop off my stuff directly at the loading dock (usually in the back) even if the PO is closed. Those guys and gals are usually much friendlier than the desk clerks too.
