"Black Beauties" occurred during the annealing process when sintered planchets were used to strike coins.

Notoriously common from Philly in the fifties

  • Well, we know what they are as we have all seen them. Some of us even remembered what the heck they are called (not me, grrrr).
But, I like them like this. They stick out in change for one. The color reminds of some sort of pre-dawn-of-time something or other from wayyy back.
Does anyone else like these dark, glittery surfaces?

So why are Dealers asking so much for them? That is crazy.....I see one trying to sell one online for $250 in MS63.image

    Keyword "Trying"

Hmmm Probably the same reason they call fishing, "fishing" and not "catching"

The trick is, locating them with lustrous or prooflike surfaces and in high grade. The charcoal surfaces add yet, another level of eye appeal to a collection.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Because the TPG's are marketing them as a collectible error coin.

I guess leaving something in the oven too long is a good thing. At least we don't have to eat them, unless we pay $250 for one. image

Gheezzz, I guess I don't go fishing enough, allthough I know I'd always throw those back,
I probably have a couple rolls of each of those in 55, 57, 58 and 59 all from Philly but nothing
as appetizing in the way Leo describes some of them. I guess theres a reason I've kept them
but I thought it was because I could'nt get rid of themimage

Looks like some nicely struck 59's. A full step "Black Beauty" might pull a little premium, but still not a $250 in MS63 or even MS65.

It does not look like "TPG Marketing" as much as it looks like a properly described error coin. Whether or not one chooses to collect such "error's" is a totally personal preference.

From my perspective, I think Type2 got a helluva deal with so many improperly annealed planchets.

Well ANACS actually puts "Black Beauty" on the slab insert. When I see a beautiful black beauty, I will let you know. All of the ones I have seen are, well, not beautiful.

Is it a Beauty? Not really but its one of those Heritage coins that was easy enough to obtain so .................... why not?

one of the more interesting things about 1959 is the huge swing in the way coins look during the year. These were both picked from the same OBW.
