<< <i>Is it time for me to sell my lowest 'known' value Doily? (1960 Jefferson in PR64 = $8.)
Obviously, the buyer would be buying the holder and not the coin.... >>
not exactly true... they'd be buying the holder, but also the fact that it's a Jefferson Nickel in a rare holder... much more rare than a Merc Dime in a Doily, so the coin most definitely matters. Might even sell for more than that MS66 merc dime just sold for if someone watching needs a Jefferson Nickel in a Doily.
The MOC Doily ended at $137.00. I decided not to go after it since I have two other 1944-S's, an MS65 at $100 (eBay), and an MS66FB at $135 (eBay). Notice the prices and what this one sold for. To go after a third of the same date and MM would be a bit . . . stupid? This one went for EXACTLY what it was supposed to go for (Hey, I just gave you priority info on my past purchases). Absolutely no loss of profit here for MOC. Dead on the Doily premium as of this date. Exactly DEAD ON. The only way he would have gotten more is if I nuked it like I have a few in the past.
Next . . . besides the Morgies, the Mercs are so prevalent in the Doily world you might be able to go out in your street and find one kicking around (look next to the curb where the dust and mud gathers). Now . . . throw up a 2c, a 3cn, or a 20-center. I think it might set the records you might be looking for to validate the continued Doily interest. Look at the threads on page one right now. Lots of slab interest . . . . and wow, it isn't from me!!! There will always be the naysayers . . but the slab world is growing at a frenetic pace. My best acquisitions now are strictly from several national dealers . . . I can't touch a Doily on eBay anymore for anything remotely like what I could get them for when I started this quest 18 months ago. So . . . I usually pass on the 'Bay, GreatCollections, or TT since I am blown out of the water by those others who want to add for Type, to just get a Doily, or to bid me up. Yeah, I wondered if the Doily market would fade too. But . . my rapidly declining checkbook would beg to differ . . .
No prob here at all . . . just take my word for it. I have picked up a few of these things in the last 2 years, and have tried to distribute experience to all who would ask. Trust me . . . my acquisitions have dramatically slowed. Not due to lack of interest. Just due to lack of willingness to pay the increased premiums for every single Doily out there! These are now being purchased by those who are developing interest, and that group is growing. Well, if not, one or two random guys are making me pay through the nose! I think it is the former . . . . ..
Oh . . . . . and I realize this is just semantics, but when I have paid less (on eBay with all of you trying to shoot me down) for a higher grade, is $137.00. . . . . . "unimpressive" ??
Not trying to be difficult here . . I just had reread the thread and found it needing a directed reply.
Seemed like a reasonable price - wouldn't have taken much more to beat my bid - needed it to compliment these for a 1944 short set.

<< <i>MOC's Doily auction just ended with a pretty unimpressive price on a Doily. Is the run over?? Doily auction >>
It still sold for more than double PCGS Price guide despite being 1 of 1,805 other 44-S Merc's and despite the fact that this coin routinely sell's for less than $30.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
<< <i>I thnk problem at hand is you guys are your own worst enemy and are the one's who have bid these thangies up and when you guys are busy watching a game or just plain full the price drops and it goes to a nonmember. >>
I would have expected it to sell for more. I didn't see it, but would have paid more if I had.
It sold for less because of a few factors I believe. 1. No one noticed 2. those who did weren't concerned since it's a common type. 3. everyone's tapped-out from spending all their money at FUN. 4. every series has ebbs and flows in the demand and pricing. 5. I didn't see it. 6. everyone was watching football.
BTW with one notable exception, I don't get many additions to the doily census anymore. Either the supply is running dry or people have stopped submitting.
the supply well is NOT running dry. There are at least 600 or mlore of these around.
keep in mind that there are three levels of doily slabs out there.
the first level was dealer and collector levels which have been accurately graded by PCGS with just a small number of significantly under graded slabs that have been in play for the last 10 years and have slowly been mpicked up by various collectors specifically pursuing a small cachet of doily slabs just because ther ARE doily slabs.
An additional 200 plus doily slabs are located in collector collections that are the next to become available but they are around in small quantities in various individual collections and not ordered in complete sets. these will become available as collectors realize that they have them floating around and are worth premium bucks. From what I have seen of these doily slabs, they are more undergraded than what has been available to the market so far.
The remaining 400 to 500 doily slabs are deeply put away by collectors of serious sets and these are in various collections of all doily slab sets put away back in 1989 when doilies were the slabs PCGS produced. These doily slabs will not be available for many years to come and there is a danger that some of these collectors will submit some or most of these sets for regrading. Thesenappear to be the most undergraded group of doilies of all.
JMHO.
I have seen one collection of nearly 150 doily slabs in a complete mint set Lincoln collection. I have been patiently waiting for the opportunity to purchase it but the collector knows what he has and also knows the set is way undergraded.
<< <i>I did not even know about this auction either. >>
OP or anybody else for that matter, the next time you spot one of these auctions, be sure the forum knows of it to insure that it sells at its maximum.

Too bad that PCGS can't find a way to regrade those without destroying the original holder.

Well, you are going to get some now - I have received several PM's on the PR64 Jefferson.
Perhaps it is time to submit my Jefferson to Heritage

Hate to tell you but some of the submitters are now dead those holders are from awhile back.
Could have been a couple bucks higher but also a couple of bucks lower as well.
But football could have affected this auction more than we realize.
