Sean you changed your avatar and it made me scared. I didnt see the crazy screaming mupet thing today and thought wtf sean hasnt replied to anything today. And now I see youre a cat.
Just thought something in this world wasnt right. But now it is. It;s more my fault bc I go by pictures and symbols or something.
Hmmm. I don't think my '96 Collector's Choice International I PSA 10 would bring those kinds of $$$s, but it may be fun just to see what I could get for it. I opened up a couple boxes to complete a set of the German version. The one I sent in (#20) came back a PSA 10...

It seriously took me a good 45 minutes to find something to use as a new image.

As tough as it is to sell most things in this hobby, I cannot believe an insert numbered to 74, which when combined with all the other Jordan "short print" inserts over the years doesn't seem very special or appealing, could sell for even $1000....let alone $18,000. I just don't believe it.

There's a huge bias towards "vintage" cards on these boards so people in their minds tend to think anything new should not hold much value. But there are plenty of collectors for modern cards, and Jordan is iconic and legendary. He is probably the biggest global team sport star of the past 40-50 years; and maybe even all sports overall, not just team. The guy hasn't played in over 12-14 years and his new sneaker releases come out at retail for $175 and immediately sell out and go for $400-1000 on the secondary market so his influence still runs strong.
Anyone who desires a 52T Mantle and has the finances can go out and buy one. All these limited /5 /25/ 50/ /100 cards are not easy to find even if you can afford them. If you just want to go by pure numbers they are scarcer than all your so called vintage cards.
There must be a collector from Japan or someone else in Asia involved. I was a huge basketball fan in the 1990's and had a lot of these Jordan inserts. While these cards were tough pulls, there were literally thousands of "rare" Jordan inserts at the larger shows. They typically sold for around 1/2 book (except in Chicago).
I was so smart back then that I traded my entire Jordan insert collection for Grant Hill inserts. I still remember the summer day when Hill left for Orlando with his bum ankle.....it was a very cold day in July for me.
The $18K sale is suspect because a very similar cards sits untouched at the same time (and that's been the case with other Jordan inserts). I think even without manipulation these cards would increase in value somewhat because collectors are realizing that production of products back then was much more so some inserts were genuinely hard to find in a pack. If you have a product like National Treasures in basketball with base parallels, it's easier to find parallels and inserts because of lower production and upon release, more breaks. It seems that the cards player collectors can't find are not recent ones (excluding 1/1s) but instead are the ones from the 1990s.

I don't really understand this thought process. Are people implying that ONLY shillers are listing these Jordans and getting these prices? If I pulled one of these from a pack or got one in a trade, are people implying that I wouldn't get these end prices? That doesn't add up.
With the results of the many Jordan sales in the past year, I would guess that there was indeed manipulation of pricing that eventually lead to deep pocket bidders getting involved.

Jordan shoes do rock the house, the Air Jordan 11 Concords went wild just before Christmas but have since settled in the $400 range.
I continue to be astonished at the realized prices for Jordan and Kobe Bryant cards, especially from the late 90's.
Am I wrong or is this the biggest phenomenon in the hobby? Nothing compares in any other sport that I know of.
I read a post last week about the crazy 1992 large Diamond King prices for Cal Ripken and with +/- 10 known copies a Ripken sold for $1000. These Jordan and Kobe prices dwarf Ripken prices, which are some of the strongest prices paid in the player collector circles.
I suppose the only other cards that come close are the 1993 Finest refractors.
Just search completed items by highest price for all sports cards. It goes something like this:
1998 UD Holding Court #d 22/23 SILVER Michael Jordan /Jordan BGS 9.5 1/1 $13650
For most collectors Jordan is the best athlete they have ever seen in any sport. Except for the few years after his retirement, I have never seen his cards go cheap.
The international sales for Jordan have always been strong which help the prices. A story I was told is that there are three big fish from Asia that collect Jordan and want everything they can get their hands on. If you can get more than one of them interested in your item it's golden. Two are in China, one of them supposedly a middle man for the crazy kid in North Korea. The third was in Hong Kong??, guess that is technically China as well, and somewhere I've seen parts of his collection posted.

I have heard many similar stories.

The most amazing part IMO is that these insert cards are now outselling in some cases his autographed cards #/23.

Seems crazy to me too, for that kind of money I'd much rather have the 86 Fleer in a PSA 10 than some random insert.

1997-98 E-X2001 Jambalaya
