Greyside collectors: Sad News

From the Canadian Coin Reference site:

"Very Special Lady...Ingrid Smith

I returned from Florida today . News of the passing of Ingrid Smith (mother of the webmaster Brian and his sister Tina) leaves a tremendous hole in Canadian and World numismatics. Many on this site never met Ingrid as she was most active in the industry in the 70's and 80's. She was a wealth of knowledge on counterfeits and was an authority in that area long after she left the main stream of the hobby. She consulted with many US companies and associations at a time where knowledge was not available with a Google search....She was my inspiration in this area and we had many discussions on suspect coins over the years.

First and foremost she was a great lady...always polite...always had lots to say and always had an open ear...two qualities rarely seen in the same person! When I started in this industry she earned my respect on the same level as Mr. Jim Charlton, Bill Cross and Brian Cornwell....perhaps because she defied the odds as a woman in a man's business...at the same time making her mark.

My sincere condolences to Brian, Christina and her husband Dick.

Sandy Campbell, 1/14/2012" (Proof Positive Coins)

I met and talked with her many times since my time here in the Toronto area. She was a spitfire and one of the true pillars of the North American (and world) Numismatic community.... a walking encyclopedia of information and assistance. She will be sorely missed.
