2011 Topps Kevin Gregg Variation

Hi Everyone,

Earlier today I was sorting a bunch of 2011 Topps base cards and I found this variation.
I have never seen this documented, so I figured that I would let everyone know.
Surprisingly, it appears that Topps took the time to actually airbrush this card.
I have roughly 25 of the 'light dirt' and 3 of the 'brown dirt' cards. The Gregg card is #111 out of series 1.

    that's a pretty noticeable difference!

    good catch
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • That's a great catch. Very cool variation. Time to see how much it will bring?

    pretty cool

parts of his throwing arm and glasses are a different color too

  • I just opened 3 different 2011 Topps factory sets that I had on hand, and all three of them had the 'brown dirt' version.
It appears that maybe the 'light dirt' variation came from packs, and the 'brown dirt' variation is in the factory sets.
I don't think either variation is scarce at all, but they definitely need to be documented.
The only question that I have for Topps is ,"Why Kevin Gregg?"
  • For future Topps Heritage Super Short Prints.

The closer isn't exactly the 6th outfielder or anything.

Kevin is a great guy. The Angels (when he was with them) were visiting Toronto and the game became the longest game in Blue Jays history (18 innings), as an Angels fan (I follow Vlad around) I was obviously cheering for a LA win. I was sitting behind the bullpen and Kevin threw me some gatorades and sunflower seeds to keep me going. In another game that series he spent a lot of time signing for kids and actually talking to them. When he was with Toronto I asked him to sign a ball for me (and directed him to the sweetspot), he turned it to sign a side panel, I asked if he wouldn't mind signing the sweet spot, he then said "are you sure?" (like he felt bad to or wasn't worthy), I think that says a lot about him.

  • Oh, I didn't mean any disrespect to Kevin Gregg himself, I'm just curious as to why Topps decided to 'airbrush' that particular card.
There are a bunch of similar 'light dirt' cards in the set, but none of them appears to have been 'airbrushed'.
It's very possible, however, that there could be more variations like this one out there.

  • I bet the first lighter card was a mistake... some one used the wrong proof card. Being into photography the 2nd card was probably the card they planned on using. I don't think any airbrushing was used just some Photoshop tricks to correct a poor photo. If you notice his face is also a strange color in the first card and fixed on the second.
