Becketts Top 100 Baseball Cards (1993)

I was going through some of my old Becketts when I was a kid and I came across this article. This magazine was from July 1993 - Its the one with Jackie Robinson on the cover and its marking Becketts 100th Baseball issue so id thought Id share. Kinda funny to see the cards that were once considered most important to the hobby - as you go through, you'll also probably notice that some of these that were hot at one point couldn't be any colder today.

BTW - I own 20, how many do you own?

A bunch of Frank cards that can be purchased for $10 total today. The one card that actually should be there was just beginning to gain recognition at the time.

Thanks for posting. I stopped collecting from '92-'06 so cool to see a list from '93 although i remember those Thomas cards going for crazy $$. I got the rc in my first pack of Leaf before his cards were hot and I remember '91 Stadium Club packs being over $10 each and his 2nd year card was the big card from that set then.

  • For sure! I also remember Stadium Club being the first real premium cards that ushered in the 90's. 1990 Leaf was great but it didnt start to take notice till AFTER 90. By then, Stadium Club was the heavy hitter. I couldn't afford series 1 so I would purchase series 2 packs. Today I own that Frank from series 1 (along with the Bowman Foil which was the key card in that set for a while) but its a little too late now. lol I did however pull Franks first Upperdeck card in 91 in my first pack and I didn't know who he was till I looked it my Beckett and took notice that it was $4 and ofcourse, like an 11 year old - I was ecstatic.

I like going back and looking at old Beckett's for exactly these kind of articles.

Since I have sold off my collection 2 or 3 times since this article came out, I like to go through and see how many cards of the top 100 I USED to have. I counted 67 of the top 100 that used to be in my collection. I miss some of them but this actually makes me realize how much I actually made off of these cards (like the 84 Fleer update Clemons and Puckett) as many were ought when they were issued and sold at the peak of their high prices. Its really amazing to go back to the old Beckett's and see how inflated many of these card prices were back in the day.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I have 1 at the moment! image
  • The list is still good to me. Maybe 10 would be reconsidered today. The Thomas 91 Stadium Club, Fleer Rookie Sensation and Bowman wouldn't make the list. Of course the Walton and the Donruss Seaver as well. Otherwise, there are still people paying a pretty penny for PSA 10's of the others. Nice walk down memory lane. I must say that all of those cards are still important today!

That's more than I have. image

    EDIT: Actually I just realised I have 46 and a 54. imageimage
  • The weird thing about the Seaver is that Donruss made an error AGAIN on his 1986 card. Thats 2 years in a row from the same company for the same player. At least they got his picture right on the 2nd one. (1986)

I guess I own 91 of them. I don't have the four '48-'49 Leaf cards, the '48 Bowman Musial and Berra, the '82 Fleer Littlefield Error, the '92 Bowman Frank Thomas, and the '92 Fleer Frank Thomas.

Thanks for posting that. It was a fun read. image

I have always hated #37 on the list. I mean it is one thing to collect pictures of men, but I draw the line at half naked men image

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I think the '87 Classic Bo Jackson is a much better card than the '90 Score but that was a popular card at that time.

Not to take away from the conversation, but exactly what methodology did they use here? How did they decide what falls in this list, value, popularity, etc.?

I think this would be a good project for someone to come up with a methodology and make a list of the top 100 cards.

Have to agree with Matt on this one....wrong sport.
  • I made it more descriptive. I added the baseball part now. Sorry to throw off the Football, Basketball, Hockey and Wrestling Guys. If I had those, I would also include it though.
