Never seen one of these in a high grade

Some of the Honduras issues can be found in high grade, but many cannot. And they're all crudely produced, so even an uncirculated piece won't look all that great. Check the Heritage Archives and you'll find some nice ones, some of which are now in my collection. I also have a fair number of not-so-nice ones. This is one series where you learn very quickly to compromise on quality, because you may never see a better one.

Pretty coin. One of my favorite designs. And speaking of Honduras, here is an example I picked up last April. NGC XF45, but essentially as struck.

  • Thanks, shouldn't think many survived with the silver wash intact, though I have a similar 2 real, but Krause lists these as contemporary copies

The 4 reals get worse each year, with the 1857s being the most debased "Copper-lead alloy" according to Krause. where all dates silvered?

Interesting series, I have several 4 reals but all pretty c**p condition

Is there a reference in print anywhere on what must be one of the most debased coinages in history?
