Can I get some thoughts on this Seated Half?

How does this coin look? Is it original? Is it authentic? I like the look, but my spidey sense is tingling...

  • Kinda looks "cast," don't you think?

Yeah, a little bit. It looks a little too perfectly worn somehow...

Nothing setting off alarms for me. I think it's attractive.

Looks genuine to me. Depending on the lighting, it might be totally original, or it might be messed with.

May just be the pictures, but the rev kinda looks corroded.

A vague uneasiness over it, but cannot tell one way or the other.

In checking WB, and then about a dozen Heritage auction archives at random, I can't find any with the CC's centered like that. They all seem to be
placed much higher up. Until I found a similar 76-cc pictured in their archives I'd have some doubts.

There's an 1877-cc WB-102 with a similar mm placement, but don't see it for any other CC date in WB.

Roadrunner is right -- mintmark corresponds to medium or large date but it is positioned lower than shown in WB (which i just received last week - thanks Rich!) i also checked CoinFacts -- none show such a low mm placement. No chance it's an unlisted variety?

Look in the denticles between/below the 8 and the 7, if there is a small half moon (an errant 8) you have a WB-35. Here is my WB-35:
Edit to add: I believe this is what your specimen is.

As useful as the WB book is for most major varieties it is outdated and old news.

The new die marriage books are really fantastic, and have virtually every die marriage currently known described in great detail. Realistically there are some unknown die marriages still out there but Bill and Randy have probably gotten over 98-99% of them documented in the new books and the books that are still in the pipeline.

The information contained in them represents a lifetime of work for two truly great numismatists.

When I blow up the picture, it looks like the errant 8 variety mentioned above. The MM placement matches as well. I love the look of that coin!

I like it and I think that it is genuine--It has that early circulated "cc" look. Carson city sometimes used almost pure silver in the early years from 1870-about 1877 or even 1878. I think this fact causes the possible difference in appearance than other mints when the coins wear. Pure silver is softer and wears faster than 90 % silver coins. Bob
