I suppose I should explain myself on the ended 1911 Lincoln auction...

As many of you know, I recently ran an auction for a 1911 Lincoln cent in PCGS MS65 RD.

Last night, at the request of my high bidder, I ended the auction early. This is the first and only time I have ever done this, and it will be the last. This bidder had a proxy bid of $400, well in excess of the coin's usual retail value, as he wanted it very badly. Being too nice for my own good sometimes, I let him have it (though not for $400). He is overnight shipping me a check, and wants me to overnight ship the coin to him. He said he wants it for a show, which explains the rush.

Spooly sent me a PM saying this was BS, and perhaps he had a point. It was dumb of me to not let the auction run its final day, anyway, since I probably left some money on the table, at the very least, not to mention I ran the risk of offending some of you here, as I know many of you were bidders on the coin. If I had it to do over again, I would have let the auction end normally. I would have had more money in my pocket and would not have smelled like a dead fish.

This is my public admission of a poor judgement call, and it's not easy to eat crow, so please don't rub it in. You all have my utmost respect and I do not wish to jeopardize that. This will not happen again. If it is any consolation, everyone who bid in any of my auctions, including the canceled one, will still of course be entered in the promotional drawing for the PR69 DCAM Ike.

  • I don't think you should eat any crow over it..just might be a carrier of the West Nile virus and that could be serious image I have seen many auctions end early, and if the price paid was satisfactory to you then congrats! As they say dohntworryabouit.

Well, I was going to bid $550.00 on it. Just kidding. I was thinking about bidding on it, but if he had $400 proxied in, he'd have wanted it more than me. As a potential bidder, I can tell you that it never bothers me if someone closes an auction early. I've made over retail offers to sellers many times. And most of the time, the seller would close it out. Bottom line, if you want the coin more than you want to save money, you should bid on it when you see it. And if you want to save money more than you want the coin, the guy making the offer is probably way over you on the offer anyway.

don't feel bad about your decision, you did nothing wrong. I once bought a coin from an ebay seller, and paid a high amount for him to end the auction so that I could get the coin for my registry set. Closing auctions early because of high offers is a fact of life. cheers, alan mendelson

Hey, hey... he's admitting he was wrong, and he's right! About being wrong, that is. image

There were something like 15 bidders that took the time to place legitimate bids in an ongoing no-reserve no-qualifications auction. Many of these bidders probably planned to come back and bid again closer to the end of the auction. Instead, they all got jerked around. Bad karma.

He Has Learned Now. If He Does it Again We will Give Him Hell.

Wow Lord! You didn't have to make a post about it! I saw your post that the coin was listed on E-bay, so I jumped over to E-bay and put in my "watch list". I was going to snip the auction. Looks like you got more than what I would have paid anyway... so it's ok. I was a little upset at first that's why I sent you a PM.

My point was....Lordmarcovan didn't have to make a public apology. But it was very big of him! Kudo's! I just figured that this was one of those PM.... things..... whats the deal?...... heres the deal.... thing. It's not like I was really pissed at him. Hell...I shouldn't have waited to snipe the auction.

You realize that you seriously broke Ebay's rules, and made it public. It is one thing to close an auction early and give the item to the then current high bidder (which is fine), or close an auction with no bids (which is fine). It is "fee avoidance" to remove all of the bids and sell the item to the highest bidder. If you want to do this, I would not make it public like you have.

          Just some thoughts.

After reading the previous message let me just clarify my own previous message: when I asked a seller to close an auction early I was either the high bidder or the only bidder. Just for the record, thanks. cheers, alan
