1870 IHC - Attribution?

Hey,

I recently picked up this IHC.. It has cartwheel luster, but appears to have strike weakness around the feather tips and on the diamonds. Is this just a different variety of the 1870 IHC? If so, any premium associated with it?

Also, what grade would you give it? Does the strike hold back the grade at all?

Thanks for your help

Nice looking coin - not a variety that I can tell - depending on how the high points look in hand, it could grade AU58 or MS63Br.

    Welcome to the forum!
A nice looking coin, and one of my favorite dates in the series.
There is definitely some strike weakness present, and perhaps a little wear also.
I'm thinking a min grade of AU55 - the rev looks MS though.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking there is the pick axe variety, a bold RPD with the
0 protruding from the dentils, a shallow N variety, and maybe a DDR also.
I don't see any of these attributes on the coin you posted.
I'm sure there are other varieties though.
Look for Rick Snow's posts (he may likely post on this thread), and then go
to his site, where he provides mucho info on die varieties of IHC's - along with some
    primo coins for sale too.

Stuff like this can be hard to grade from an image because one can't rotate the coin in the light and look for luster breaks on the high points (cheek, ribbon and hair above the ear, mostly) which could be the difference between a technical AU or MS grade. At this grade level the strike can and will often reduce the *market* grade (not the technical grade).

Based on just what I see, I suspect the market would view it as about an AU-61.

Nice coin. AU-55 or AU-58. The obverse die shows weakness due to a strike-trough debris. That is when something gets stuck in the die and prevents the design from striking up fully. Since the reverse is fully struck, it is not a weak strike.

    Shallow N - Reverse of 1869.

  • Thanks everyone. I thought it was a shallow N, but didnt know it was the reverse of 1869.

The weakness on the front and full strike on the back had me confused - Thanks for clearing that up Rick.

The feather tips are often weak, even in high MS grades. Shallow N not really important until 1871-1872.

I could find a nice home for it in my AU collection...... image
