Registry and Album Question

Being new to the collecting game what I'm asking is probably just about a basic as it can come.

What constitutes a Registry set?

I think that it is the following:

A collection of graded coins for a particular coin type (morgans, peace, or Eisenhower). The higher number of graded coins the better. Ie: all proofs or high graded circulated coins and then having the set judged by either the tpg or peers.

Is this it or is there more to it?

Like many forum members I also have a couple of albums. Could any album be considered a registry set?

For example: since the ATB coins are basically just coming out, would it be better to do the album with non-graded proof and circulated coins, or start to put together graded coins since at this point in time the graded coins will be cheaper now rather than in 10 - 15 years when you have to play catch up.

Just wondering. I was planning on getting my children started in this set and was wondering which was a better way to go.

  • A Registry set consists of coins graded by PCGS and then listed on the PCGS Registry by up loading the PCGS number on the coin slab. They are not really judged, they are there to be admired and keep track of and enjoyed by yourself. You can view your coins whenever you wish without going to the bank every day to see your coins. You can get awards if your one of the top sets.

You also have to send each coin in to be graded to get into the Registry. It cost around $30 for a raw coin to certified, so It can get costly. You also have to pay to insure and ship your coins. You may want to decide for yourself if it's worth the cost to send in your set of coins or just find coins in PCGS holders already.

PCGS Registry Sets are in fact judged the end of June every year. This is how the Registry Set awards are determined.

  • A couple of replies answered the basic question. The other big grading company also has a registry. Raw album coins might be fun, but are not part of the registry game.

As for buying expensive coins for kids, I discourage folks from doing this. Unless, the kids are truly interested in coin collecting, it tends to be a waste. Buy what you like, forget about building collections for kids. Most inherited coins or gifted coins are liquidated for a small fraction of their retail value. Better to pass on a few low value coins with high sentimental value. It can be a harsh reality for collectors, that their kids have little interest in their cherished hobby and treasured coins, but better to understand that reality than have the fantasy about valuable coins being passed down for generations because it so rarely happens that way.
