"Seal Popped" - PSA Pack Grading Q **86 Fleer Ripped **

hello, so i bought a few 86 fleer bkball packs from BBCE back in November. Sent them into to PSA and one came back as "Seal Popped". The pack looked fine when it left, but of course it went through the mail and was handled by the PSA guys. Haven't seen it yet, as the grades came up today.

Is this common to have it happen on the way to PSA? I can't really go back to BBCE b/c the pack was fine when it left, but I guess by the time it reached Steve's hands at PSA the seal had popped. Do i complain to PSA (but how do i avoid it being my word v. their word?)

****Updated****
So received the packs back, the seal seemed to be maybe hanging on by a thead, but since it didn't pass PSA i decided to open it. My first 86 fleer pack opened. wish it had been under better circumstances.

Question- most of the cards had a pretty rough cut, how does PSA grade these? are they ok with it like OPCs?

MJ must have gone missing!!?

The very reason I've never sent a pack in for grading. A card can be secured easily, but packs seem so risky.

Could you file a claim with USPS?

I think you may have to take this up with usps or whomever you shipped it through. Its my understanding that once you send the packs to psa in Cali they then send it off to Steve in Il. Unless there is alot for him to authenticate then he goes out there. I could be wrong though

I doubt that you can file an insurance claim for a popped seal on a 25-year-old wax pack. Unfortunately, this is one of the possibilities that you have to face when submitting unopened product for grading. How did you package the packs when you sent them?

Have you ever experienced this problem when submitting?
  • I have never heard of that happening. That really sucks. I feel for you.

Not with popped seals, but I have a couple occasions with wrapper tears with the older-style holders. I use the self-sealing team bags with a rigid toploader inside the team bag to support the back of the pack and keep it flat. The cardboard boxes that PSa uses to ship graded packs in, which are more than 2x the size of the boxes they use to send back graded cards in, will comfortably fit about 18-20 packs, and then I add plenty of peanuts to fill the space in the box.

Yeah I feel like I packed them well, but this was my first pack submission, Thinking of sending it to gai depending on what it looks like when it comes back since I know it's real since the others were graded from the same bbce order. Tho I'm a little tempted to see if this is fate tellIng me to open it, yet I don't really love the $350 gamble

If seal is popped, it is unlikely GAI will holder it either. If you open it and tempt fate, I hope you pull a mint Jordan!

For what its worth, I busted a couple 86 Fleer packs at this years National. I did not hit a Jordan, but did land decent RC's (Drexler, Dumars, Thomas and Dominique Wilkins) andwas able to sub 23 of the 24 cards. Of those, I got 3 PSA 10's and 15-9's. I was able to nearly get my money back from what I spent on those packs. So point being, you might not be taking that big of a gamble.

I just have a feeling that pack has a MJ rookie in it.

FYI if the seal is popped it will not be graded by GAI either. Don't waste the grading fee or run the risk of a pack getting "lost" at GAI. They will try to give you grade credits for the loss.

At best you might get some free grades from PSA. I doubt that the USPS would do anything for you.

lol thanks for the ripping encouragement! What a shock that the board wants me to rip them! I'll put up a picture of the pack when it comes back from PSA
  • Once the seal has been popped, you toss her to the curb!
  • Top loader against the back ot the pack, inside a team bag then wrapped in bubble or something similar.
I've still had popped seals during transit or more likely from subsequent handling. They become openers. Unfortunate when one is collecting packs.image
