SCD grading, any experience at all?

Just as the title says, wondering if anyone has any experience with SCD grading. I do remember SCD from way back in the day, and getting them all the time to see where the card shows were going to be.

Any info appreciated, thanks in advance.

  • Is this purchasing a card that is SCD graded, or getting a card graded?

I believe I read on a thread recently there was an old SCD, that was pretty decent, but there is a new company that is using their likeness on slabs but is complete junk.

The old SCD cards (red label) were pretty decent. I had a vintage SCD 5 that I cracked and sent to PSA and it graded a PSA 5.

Old label SCD cards are generally OK, but they have impaired value now because A) the company long since ceased grading operations and B) because of A, many collectors don't even know who they are.

I have a couple of commons graded 9 - newer flip, both appear to be solid 8's at a minimum. However, common sense and skepticism tells me my results might not be the norm.

SCD and PRO graded cards can be very good deals...
if you know your cards and ignore the slab/flip completely

both of those companies DO NOT grade reprints, but may overgrade or grade trimmed cards

many a newbie see the (nonPSA) name on the slab and move on to the next auction. I have found great midgrade cards in both holders, a Tango Egg Jennings and a T206 Mathewson (white) in PRO slabs, and also a few 1950s regionals ie 1952 Mothers Chuck Connors and Mel Ott, and also 3 1955 Old Homestead Franks cards in SCD holders.

all I paid Less than what the card would have sold for raw. all were cracked out, and a couple were regraded by SGC.

know your cards, buy the card not the holder

My only experience with SCD (the old red label) was with 83-86 Star Co Basketball, because at the time PSA, BGS, or GAI did not grade them. In my opinion they grade pretty tough in comparison to PSA. I think a large part of that is they weight centering into the equation (as does BGS) much more than PSA. All my SCD Star Co Basketball cards graded the same or higher for GAI or BGS. If the card has high subs for corners and edges you probably have a winner.

Red label SCD should holder most of the time with SGC/PSA (not saying it would cross to the same grade)....if a high $ card anything in a new label (non-red) is a different company and is most likely altered.

Of course some slip through the cracks. I had purchased a 1958 Topps Mantle AS...cracked it and it came back trimmed.
