Best Inadvertent Purchase?

I was thinking about some of the things I've bought over the years. I tried not to think about the bad (25,000 1991 Topps Marc Newfiled RC's @ $15/1000) or the good (5,000 1990 Score Martin Brodeur RC's $50/1000), but tried to think of the inadvertent purchases that turned out better than expected.

In the late 1980's and early 1990's I used to buy bulk rookies (as you can gather from the above) as well as bulk lots of select minor league sets. I believe it may have been during the latter part of the summer of 1993 when I was really gung-ho on Ruben Rivera (Yankees prospect). I ended up buying a 100 count lot of 1992 Fleer/ProCards Gulf Coast Yankees for the Rivera (probably about $6/set). Lo and behold, Rivera made more headlines for later stealing the glove of teammate and a former prospect that was also in the set, Derek Jeter. Anyway, in the late 1990's, these sets blew up and I broke 25 for grading, kept 25 sealed and sold 50 of them between $100-200 per. When BGS premiered the jersey and bat inserts (do they still do them), I sold 20 of the last 25 sealed sets to a dealer ($150 per) that was going to have them slabbed with BGS with the jersey swatch.

So, while nearly pissing away about $600 on Ruben Rivera minor league sets, I inadvertently turned a total screw-up into more than $10,000... And I've still got 5 sealed set and a couple of PSA 9s left.

Now, if only I could find some way to inadvertently find profit in the Newfields, then I'd be on to something.

Let's hear how some of your potentially horrendous purchases turned into gold...

I actually did pretty well once on an 'investment' of 10 or 15 Corey Snyder '86 Fleer rookies. Snyder busted, but at roughly the same time 'the other guy' on the card, Cecil Fielder, came back from Japan, and I think I got about 15 bucks a card back in 90/91.

Not really an inadvertent purchase, but I bought a 1960 Topps wax pack at a good price to try and flip it. As I was inspecting the seal the flap popped open, so there was no turning back. Luckily there was a Mantle/Boyer rivals card that graded out to a 9 and I tripled my money on the pack. Since all the other cards in the pack were to OC to grade (admittedly the Mantle/Boyer probably should've been a 9OC and it was the best centered card in the pack), it could've easily been a $230 loss.

These inadvertent purchase threads are becoming a little redundant
