Nostalgia or just crazy?

Admittedly, I've never toured one of the mints yet or stood upon the site of one that no longer exists. I hope to rectify that soon. But one of my desires is to hold an old coin in my pocket and "take it back to its birthplace" of the mint as I tour it...imagining the sounds of the machinery and the lives of the people that worked there and helped give birth to the coin that I now admire. Like a homecoming of sorts.

I think it would feel amazing to have an 1883-CC Morgan in my pocket as I stand in the old Carson City mint/Nevada State Museum. Or holding a 1793 large cent (heh...wish I had one) at the site where the old Philadelphia mint stood. Perhaps to crouch in the New Orleans mint or the foundation of the Dahlonega mint and envision the sounds of the machinery pounding out the 1850 Liberty Head dollar (wish I had one of these too) in my hand.

I explained all of this to my wife and she just stared at me blankly. Am I out in left field or do any of you feel that way too? Coins seem to be an imaginative gateway to the past.

Many a coin collector has spent many of hours daydreaming about the stories coins could tell and where their birthplaces are.

At the last CC mint show I had a couple CC mint bags in the case with the GSA's. That felt cool.

In late August there is a coin show held at the old Carson City Mint with the building now home to the Nevada State Museum. If you ever come to that show you'll find out within a few seconds your idea of taking coins back to their birthplace is shared by almost every dealer and attendee there.
