OT: Should I become a star dinger?

I bought a blank Harley Davidson house key on ebay recently, and I had it cut at a hardware store. It worked fine for a couple of days and then it just broke in half in the lock (thankfully I was able to get it out without calling a locksmith). The seller said "sorry, no refunds", and ebay found in the seller's favor. It's obviously not a big deal because it's a low $ item - it's just about principle. I was thinking about leaving a neutral feedback, 3 stars for "How accurate was the item description?" and 5 stars for the others.
Too harsh? Not harsh enough? What say you? Thanks.

I would send him a message letting him know if he doesn't issue you a replacement (probably cheaper for him than a refund - or ask for a refund, either works)...
Let him know that you feel that since the item broke in X time frame he is responsible for selling a faulty product - and negative feedback will be left about the product if it isn't replaced.
Pretty much make no mention of any beef with him, let him know the feedback will be strictly that the item isn't reliable, something to that extent... Ebay can't delete it if you don't curse him out or make a personal reference.
Give him whatever stars you feel necessary for shipping etc (be truthful), but give him a 1 for item description or something, which is what he would warrant. That shows ebay you aren't purposely dinging the stars, just one category.
Those are my thoughts...

<< <i>From what you said I don't see that the seller did anything wrong. Items bought on Ebay do not typically come with a warranty. It's impossible to prove if he knew the keys were cheap; or even if they were as it could have been a fluke situation. The smart seller would refund the money but likewise the smart buyer would give positive and move on with life. >>
Smart buyer would give a positive? WTH why would you give a positive if you bought something that broke within a week while using it in the method it is suppose to be used? The item is a POS and shouldn't have been sold in the first place. If the seller doesn't either issue you a refund or a replacement than you leave a NEG and give him 1 star for item as described. Anything less is pure BS and allows him to continue to sell junk to others.

I explained to him what happened, and he said no to a refund, and no to a partial refund. He blames my lock (but for years I've had no problems with my regular keys).

because thats like buying a mint bb card and a week later dropping it on the floor dinging a corner and trying to get your money back because the card stock should have handled the drop... the key was altered by him having it cut, how do you know it wasnt something the hardware store did when they cut it,,, jeepers,,
He wouldn't sell you keys that aren't usable.... Hence a key breaking being his cost of business....
Like I said, I'm sure that if his keys weren't faulty and he knew it he SHOULD be replacing it.
If they are faulty he should just give a refund because they probably cost him nothing and it isn't worth the hassle.
<< <i>I mean, they sell these blank keys in almost every home depot or other key/alarm places but you chose to go the ebay route for a housekey????? >>
It was $5 w/free shipping, and I got 10 cents in ebay bucks!
If you buy a key from home depot and it broke in 2 days... They would replace it... Because that is what is supposed to happen.
I'm pretty sure you would feel the same way had you have a product break on you in 2 days, stop playing hardass on the internet.
All it boils down to is that the seller didn't list just one key... He sells his keys on ebay... So he is a key retailer, and if his product is faulty, it needs to be replaced or refunded.
<< <i>Underwear is intended to be used too, but you can't demand a refund if you crap your pants. What was the blood-alcohol level at the time of breakage? >>
If I crapped my pants, that would be all my fault. What did I do wrong with the key? All I did was use it about 3 times. I've never had a key break before in 25+ years. My BAC was 0.0%

<< <i>It amazes me we get a post like this every week. I really don't know how many of you survive in the world. I see half of you confused and lost in a grocery store because product C is out of stock. >>
Because they know they get an answer. I don't mind answering them every once in a while.
Edited to add...
I know that on the board a lot of questions about shipping, ebay, and paypal will get answered accurately, so if I do have a question I can ask it here.

It passes the time sometimes, so like I said, it doesn't really bother me - I don't click on them unless I'm prepared to post.
Instead of posting something negative people should just move on, there's no need to try and make someone feel bad because you disagree with their post.... If it's OT don't click it and let it die... If it gets no posts and they don't bump it no harm/no foul is done.
<< <i>IT OBVIOUSLY IS A BIG DEAL.....for you to take the time and pose your issue on here.....I would ding the hardware guy!!!!! hope you don't buy your condoms on the bay also.... >>

It's what they SHOULD do but there is no law that requires them replace a faulty product. The seller may be a delta bravo but there is certainly no law that requires them to replace a product. If they were selling knowingly faulty products then I might be inclinded to leave a neg but we have no proof. Again, I think it's move on with life time for the OP... in my humble opinion.
it would be ok to use this specific brand of TP because it breaks down fast in septic systems. My septic system
backed up and now the seller won't pay for it to be pumped out. I have repeatedly emailed him
and even spoke to him on the phone, (skype actually) now he won't return my emails nor take my calls.
Should I file a SNAD? Ding his stars? Can someone please help me??? What can I do? I have to crap in
a bucket and dump it outside (into my neighbors yard). Thanks in advance.

If your neighbor's house is vacant at the moment, it is perfectly acceptable.

lololol,, its like buying a stick of wood to carve into something,,, screw it up and ask for a refund because although he sold it to me i couldnt carve it the way i wanted to so gimme my money back,,,
HE ALTERED THE KEY!!!!,,, hello,
<< <i>HE ALTERED THE KEY!!!!,,, hello, >>
Yes, but it's not like I did anything out of the ordinary. A blank key is made to be cut.
If I bought an old coin and decided to drill a hole in it to make a necklace, I wouldn't even consider asking for a refund if it broke in half.
On the coin or drill bit? What if you just bought the drill bit and it broke the first time you used it. The seller must be at fault.

More fees for ebay means a lesser chance of ebay raising their fees.
I don't think this seller sells enough to qualify for a discount anyway.

Could you list both parts separately, or would you have to sell them as a set?

Are you sure it was a key that could be cut and used in a lock and it wasn’t a novelty key that people collect?

definitely separate auctions, that way 2 collectors can get in a bidding war and then the sky's the limit.
<< <i>Are you sure it was a key that could be cut and used in a lock and it wasn’t a novelty key that people collect? >>
Yes. They even make different ones to fit other types of locks (such as Kwikset, and Schlage).
