I sympathize more with dealers when they're honest. they have to buy at a level that guarantees a profit, otherwise, why bother being in business? buyers looking for top dollar should sell themselves and do the leg work and assume the risk, they shouldn't be walking into a friggin PAWN SHOP image

yes, im going to watch that show for sure
  • I don't understand why people, after they call in the expert for the 'appraisal', don't just ebay the item.
  • Actually, for the coins that have appeared on Pawn Stars, the prices paid have almost all been well above previous auction sales.

Yep. In fact, they've screwed themselves a couple of times.

Yep. If you want to be lazy then sell at a pawn shop. If you want top dollar eliminate the middle man, assume the risk and do the work. I haven't seen too many frail 90 year old ladies selling in pawn shops.

because, in general, people are lazy, and are won over with some guaranteed Benjamins waved in their face instead of the trouble of selling. The average person does not even have one comprehension on how to sell on ebay. Granted, I do not think many of these items end up in their show now. I just think the item becomes a show prop and the bargaining is a part of the show.

  • I think also the editing of the show isnt going to show us everytime the customer walks out with the item unsold. It shows a few times rick getting knocked back but mainly i think to remind us it does happen, probably often.

If he doesn't I got a buddy in the dating service business. I'll give him a call and have him come down and tell us more about dating.

Realty TV is often has nothing to do with reality.
  • Is the jury in on Big Daddy & The Silver dollar new pawn stars ? Last night he had 2 x $5000 & 2 x $10000 bills sister paired he couldn't buy plus Jerry Lee Lewis 1st ever recording valued at 15k,he offered 30k and the seller still wouldnt part with it once it had been authenticated.

Going into commercials they have their questions about the shop and I remember one of them was what percent of people do not make a deal and leave with their item and it was 75%. So 3 out of 4 people who come their do not sell their item to the pawn guys.

The thing that gets me is that pawn shops were set up for the most desperate of people who cannot get money any place else which means when you go their you should always expect to receive bottom dollar. Why people go there and expect anything other then the lowest possible offer just does not make much sense until you stop and think about the thing this country has lacked the most over the past 20 or so years. . . . . COMMON SENSE

They go to the pawn shops for the quickest way to get their money to fund their next auction. Seems time is crucial in securing more and more valuable lockers maybe. I don't know.

I'm actually curious if you can talk people down at a Pawn Shop.

I know on esoteric goods and things where there aren't well developed price floors and ceilings it's possible. What about if they have a coin with a well established value that they obtained cheaply?

Or the guy sells it and then you see the pawn dude saying he is going to double or triple his money on it.

Hardcore Pawn on Tru TV might be the closest to reality of pawn shops. No antiques, just desperate people looking to make a quick buck by selling worthless junk to these places for $5-10. Take out the drama from that show and you pretty much have a typical pawn shop.

You can cherrypick coins at a pawn shop, just like at a B&M.

Even though pawn shops will typically pull out a retail price guide when pricing a coin, if you have superior knowledge you can find good finds amongst the dreck and purchase same for far less than its true value.

I remember a forum member [Madmarty??] who bought a 1938 or 1939 proof set from a pawn shop for about $150.00 some years ago.

I bought a 1956 proof set in OGP that contained a two sided CAM, possible DCAM half dollar in it for about $50.00 some years ago.

I met a guy once who hunted in pawn shops/antique shops. While hunting he found a grouping of raw buffalo nickels at a pawn shop that he looked through and bought for about $3.00 or $4.00 per coin. In the group of coins he saw [before he bought and which caused him to buy] multiple doubled dies and/or overdate coins from the teens. He resold these coins for thousands of dollars.

That or they didn't like all the advertizing he was doing, with the hat and truck and all. bu-bye!

Someone should trade the goat in on Pawn Stars and when they ask for 2,000 for the goat be like youll get more work out this goat in a day that you would get from chumley in a year and you know thats true.
