1953 Bowman color

I never in my wildest dreams ever though that I would ever have a 53 Bowman Color Set because of cost and availability.About Two years ago I ran into an auction from a guy that was selling 3/4 of a low grade set at a very reasonable price so I purchased it.Cards were VG to VG/EX some better some worse.I was able through time finish it up with several graded and sent in the rest of the cards to be graded in 2 bulk lots.I entered the Set on my registry without any fanfare because of it be so low grade. This past week I finished putting all the card pictures on the Registry as I only had entered a few till this past week.
Many collecters for years say this is one of the nicest set ever released (a pure card). After enetering the cards I did page all the card through the registery and I will be D*mmed even at the grade these cards present very nice.I am happy I did what I did.One Consignment seller told me he would have buyers crawling over this set however I have decided to pass.
If you want to look at the one of the worst good looking sets hit my link.

Thanks.!!!

Outstanding Tony! That set was ahead of its time. Those pics are like little postcards. My faves from that set are the Musial, Campanella, and the Ford.
When there isn't much going on in here, I like to check out peoples registry sets. I loved reading the comments you added to your 59 set. I did check out a few of your 53s, but I plan on sitting down with a cup of coffee and flipping through the whole set tomorrow morning.
    Thanks for sharing!

A set of those at any grade is a thing of beauty. Great stuff, Tony.

Awesome! I picked up some of these in a collection I bought recently. Though they only comprised about 5% of the collection, they stood out from the rest.

If only PSA didn't murder them in grading. image

My favorite post war set- clean design, great photography, as close to perfect as you can get.Yours looks great, and the technical grades and wear are completely overshadowed by the design. A really nice set, and its great you scanned every one of them to share.
I picked up an uncut sheet last month, looks even better in person than in the scan.
Here's a bit of trivia- there is one black and white image in the color set, can anyone tell me which one it is?

I need to go change my pants. The first card on that sheet if one of my all-time favorite cards, then a Mantle at the bottom. Very Nice sir, very nice.

Nice. Well centered mid grades cards have a certain appeal to me as well.

@ Griffins; # 33 Pee Wee Reese a flexichrome shot. Warren Spahn is my favorite from this set. Particularly interesting is the design of No. 99 Warren Spahn’s Braves uniform. Don’t overlook the ornate trim on the collar and sleeves, the team name and tomahawk on his chest, and the Indian headdress on Spahn’s left shoulder. Also notice the outdated “B” on the traditional Braves hat. The “B” was replaced with an “M” in 1953, after the team moved to Milwaukee. From Sport's Collector's Digest.

Very cool set, Tony! Thanks for posting all the scans. I'd rather see a registry
filled with low-mid grade sets WITH scans included than a registry with all
hi grade sets and no scans to view.

And that's a gorgeous sheet, Anthony, especially considering all the cool cards
that happen to be included on it.
  • Awesome set! One of my all time favorites!
I have no collecting direction. I just buy stuff!

Anthony, 3rd row all the way to the right?

    Good for you.

Steve, Psychump had it. Pee Wee's card started out as a black and white shot (shot before WWII, according to lore) and hand colored.

Chuck, great to see you on here again!

Good to see you posting here n' there as well, Anthony, and that you
still have a few gems in the collection!

Regarding the '53 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese, it is indeed a great
card (I did not know the trivia about it being originally B&W).

It is a card so nice, I couldn't resist getting it twice (albeit 8 yrs apart)...

I agree, completely. Lots of terrific cards in that set but the Spahn is Holy Grail #2 for me, behind only the Aaron rookie.

Thanks for the nice comments I plan on updating a few of the cards if the price is right like the Reese,Musial and Berra to a 3 or 4 at best, although its not a priority at this time.

  • Great set, and congrats on completing it.
This thread inspired me to buy two nicely centered PSA 4's while watching football and drinking a bunch of Crown Royal Coke Zero's. Can't imagine I got a remotely good deal on either one of them, but now if I ever want to take the plunge and start the set, I'm only 158 cards away!
