Do people wait 2 minutes for an auction listing to load? I used to try to keep it down to 2 photos of less than 100K each. Now if everybody has a reasonable internet connection perhaps I could go to a total of 500K or 1M of photos?

There's more to it than that. A larger file size does not necessarily mean a better picture.

I'd be more concerned with the dimensions of the photo, rather than its physical size. I've seen a lot of listings in which the photo is way too wide, causing words in the description to get cut off, forcing the user to do a lot of tedious side-scrolling. Hence I usually go with a max. width of 1000 pixels, which is generally sufficient to accommodate the vast majority of users who have monitor resolutions of 1024 x 768 & up.

Agreed about max width. From the poll results it looks like I can both increase size and reduce compression. That should make for better photos!

I usually go 1000 pixels wide as well. Any wider and some will end up having to side scroll which no one likes to do.
