Roll guys; what's the latest on cents?

I've always been fascinated with how quickly so many millions up millions of wheat cents were pulled from circulation in what seemed like a very small amount of time-- they were a "lucky find" when I was 10 in the early 80s.

Now we've got not only a new design but an entirely new metal. It's no secret that copper cents are worth more than a penny; every major news outlet has covered this. I'm curious, in any given roll, what are you roll guys finding?

  • lots of fun stuff... i started really hitting the penny rolls hard a few months ago... typically do $50 a week (2 boxes of $25)... all the rolls I search are from bank boxes, no hand rolled stuff ever.... average roll is all over the place... still lots of copper and lost of moderns...

past month has been great for findings... if i recall, I pulled 160 wheats out of 2 boxes a few weeks ago and last week's I pulled about 90... that's on top of the occasional steel cent as well... i've found two indian heads (1902, 1909)... the 1909 would probably grade a solid XF... it was nice enough that it actually replaced the coin I had in my circulated 7070 album! Pretty cool to fill a 100+ year old spot w/ a circulation find... i've found a few errors and one or minor clipped planchets... lots of BU coins from the 1960s and 70s incl some S mint stuff... when i first started I was looking for cherry pickers guide varieties and found a couple minor ones (one of the minor 1972 DDOs) but i've since just been focused on dates and mint marks... i do still glance over some coins for the easy varieties but don't break out a loupe unless something catches my eye

all in all, it's WAY more fun that I thought it would be. I've successfully filled a good chunk of my Lincoln Dansco (1909-2000 something) strictly from circulation... that's the goal at least... a few teens wheats (w/ some mintmarks even), handful of 20s, some 30s, 40s and 50s are nearly complete except for "S" mint coins...

there's something therapeutic and extremely relaxing on a Friday to rip through a few thousand pennies while just unwinding in my office... plus, i don't feel bad dumping a ton of pennies into a bank's counter machine (always felt awkward dumping $500-1000 in halves at a time)

I think i'll keep on the pennies for a bit then maybe switch it over to nickels or dimes... nickels would probably be easier to get most of a set complete and maybe find the occasional Buff but dimes have the possibility of silver to make it more interesting...

The "PLAN" as I see it, is that verrrrry quickly all non magnetic cents and nickels will be removed from circulation by the Fed. Can you Imagine the value of the nickel copper and even zinc the Government can recycle (sell). And funny thing is, is that they have every right to do this. The roll hoarders may have the last laugh yet, and all those old mint sets will skyrocket in value. They may be the only source for examples of coinage from this era.

So I'm curious, are the people sorting the rolls keeping the copper cents?

I did that about 5 years ago and got about 2 gallons of copper cents, if that's any measure. Haven't done it since then.

I've sorted thousands upon thousands of pennies solely looking for cooper. One day when I know more about Lincolns I'll go through all of them and see what I have image.

What you DON'T have are any of the wide AM pieces...

Yea, I had my little phase where I sorted through about 7 or 8 bank boxes of cents sorting out copper vs zinc. Once I got to the 5th box I realized I didn't even think about the wide AMs...I was so mad at myself but there was no way I was looking through all of them again.

As for my experiences searching rolls I'd come across about 20 common wheats per box, along with the usual Canadian cents and 1 or 2 unusual foreign pieces that kept things interesting. I remember my last few boxes didn't yield as much copper as I hoped but it has been about 8 months since I've done any searching.
