bizarre ebay tactic.....

There was a piece on ebay, with a $119 BIN that sat untouched for 10 days. NOW, its listed with a $180 BIN on a 30 day listing.

Pretty common tactic, actually: List an item at a reduced price for a short time in hopes that it will sell. If it doesn't sell, put it back in the store at a higher price for the long term.

People do buy high-priced stuff that has been languishing for months/years. It always amazes me, but it keeps happening.

....I passed by at 119 feeling the coin was overpriced at that!

That's why I like to always add an "or best offer" to my listings.

I don't think eBay lets people haggle do they? Isn't there a rule where there is only one second offer allowed before the offers are shut down? How about letting buyer and seller work together with counter-offers until they come to an agreed number?

eBay allows for three "best offers" until the potential buyer is shut out of the listing for a defined period of time. Nothing prevents the buyer and seller from taking the negotiation off-line and determining the best price and then completing the sale on eBay. Of course, eBay does frown upon completing the sale off-line.

I've seen it happen before. I've also seen an item sell at the higher price after going unsold at the lower price.
