Baseball Player Drinking Glasses?

Anyone know much about various baseball player glass sets? I saw one at a show in New York last year that I wish I had bought, or at least written down the details.

I'm familiar with the 1993 McDonald's set, and that's not it. This was from the 1970s and the dealer said they came in both glass and plastic cups.

Anyone? I'd be open to learning about any glass sets, as I think they'd be a great collection.

Here's a picture of some of the McDonald's set, if anyone else is curious. It's a great set, but do note that there is a rare Carl Yazstremski glass that was issued only in the Boston area.

I agree, sort of confusing, asking about a 70's set threw me off.

    Good for you.

Sorry if I was unclear. I own the set pictured (which is from 1993 and is quite nice and not too rare or expensive). I'm looking for info on another set from (I believe) the late 1970s. The dealer I talked to said the plastic cups were more common and he had a couple of the glasses. I would have bought the set but he only had a couple of random players. I should have taken them anyway. I think the same image was used on waste baskets IIRC. I think the set had the typical late 70s stars such as Reggie, Palmer, Rose, Carlton. I'm not sure of any specific players, but those are the types of guys I saw.

    Drew,
The set I believe you are talking about is from 1981, it was sponsored by Pepsi for the glasses, I believe for an Icee drink of some sort for the plastic. They have drawings of the players and a saying on them as well. The Reggie says "When Reggie does his thing . . . it's baseball's sweetest swing". The glasses are a little tougher to find than the plastic, but neither are super tough, there are usually a few on ebay from time to time, the most common seem to be Reggie, Dave Parker and Mike Schmidt. I have plastic ones of the Reggie, J.R. Richard, Guidry and a few others I believe. Another cool item is that there are large metal trash cans of the exact same set. I have seen Reggie, Guidry and Schmidt, not sure if there are others, those are super rare.

Looks like two different sets were produced, or we have some fakes (really????) going around.

Some have straight verticle sides, and some are the "pint" style where the glass gets larger from bottom to top.

NM - trick of the eye. I had my wife check mine, and they do look more like pint glasses when you look at them at the right angle.

There is another Yaz McDonald's glass on eBay with a $4.99 minimum bid. I also searched under 'completed listings' and it seems you can pick up the Yaz glass for under 10 bucks pretty easily.

My understanding is that the Yaz glass was issued when Boston fans complained they didn't have a player in the set.

Here are pictures of my full set, including one with the different sides. It really is a very nice set. One interesting thing is that they thought Johnny Bench needed some flashier pinstripes, so they used an airbrush (or whatever) to darken them. The player selection is interesting, too. Brooks over Schmidt or Brett?

I do think the Super Action glasses are the ones I was looking for. I've seen a couple online, but it would be a lot easier and cheaper to find a full set. Maybe someday!

Being really close to 50, my memory is not as sharp as I'd like it to be. That being said, I recall getting all the glasses except Yaz through a promotion at Baltimore area McDonalds. I was most likely still subscribing to SCD at that time and probably heard about the Yaz glass that way. Word was it was only distributed in Boston area McDonalds.

I wholeheartedly agree that this board is a fantatic source of information. I'm glad I stumbled upon it one day and really happy to be a member.

Abe, thanks for the lead. Here's an image of some of the glasses. I don't know if there are more, but these are pretty cool!

I was at Yankee stadium in the early 90s and they had a set of Cy Young Award Winner plastic tumbler cups they gave out at the stadium. I got the Whitey Ford one while I was there. I have looked for a Bob Turley one for years but haven't seen one. Anyone have a lead on one? I have looked at ebay off and on and never seen one there either.

I have a vintage Mark Fidrych glass from Sanders, a local Detroit ice cream chain. I don't think it's particularly rare or valuable, but I find it cool. IIRC, it was actually produced in 1976, before Fidrych actually had a baseball card to collect.

There was also an Expos set issued in 1984 (on glass), with at least 3 that I know of in the set - Carter, Dawson, and Rose.

According to Beckett, Tim Raines was issued in a 1985 Expos set (on plastic) - it's unclear if there were others in the set.
