.... Actual coin is pictured and this is the rarest morgan in the series. I have not come across many of these and this is your chance to finish a set or own a rare coin. I bought this in an estate sale

Just for my info, what did the seller do wrong? Was it that they used pictures form DL's auction archive? What if they had purchased the coin from DL auction and were just using the photos, would that be ok? I'm asking because occasionally I will sell a coin I bought at Heritage and they take really nice pictures.

Edit: I do realize that the 85-S isn't a key date like he says, and that the pictured coin is actually a proof. I'm just curious if it is not ok to use an auction websites pictures, if you do actually own the coin.

    Thanks.

Come on Dan, he says he bought them at an estate sale and they are in plastic bags.

Besides which, David Lawrence shows the coins are still for sale and are not in plastic bags.

    We'll get them shut down.

To answer your question, Dan, no, it is not okay to use the images without permission.

  • I think "actual coin is pictured" would indicate an issue when the coin in the picture is worth thousands and yours is starting at 31 bucks.

Ok sure. To be clear, it's obvious this person's auction is shady. On the other hand, I don't think that legitimate auctions should be shut down based on assumptions. I was only asking to make sure I don't run afoul of the ebay police here ;-)

Seriously though, it wasn't clear to me that I couldn't use HA's pics in my auction. I own the coin, but I see the argument that it doesn't entitle me to own a picture of the coin, or use the picture for another sale. I can't find it spelled out anywhere on their site, and they don't put a watermark or anything like that on their pictures. Maybe it's just common sense, and I don't have enough of it.

    Fair enough.

Nonsense, that might only apply if you did not ask the question! image

Thanks Eric. I try to be an honest person and live my life the right way. For some reason I had assumed that ownership of a coin meant ownership of pictures of that coin. Comments here made me think otherwise so I wanted to clear it up. It looks like you're in a business involved with coin photography, so thank you for your input.

Photographers own the rights to images they produce.

To use a photographers work without permission is just plain stealing .........

ABSOLUTELY! This is why I do not post images from my collections to ocean liner sites or other areas of interest.

I just found the part of the Heritage user agreement that states you can only use content from their site for personal use. I would post the pertinent section of the agreement here, but that would violate sed agreement. Instead I'll follow the rules and post a link:

Sorry for taking this thread off topic, but the original intent of the thread had run its course.
