I knew the CNG stopped pre-bidding today but I thought the live auction was tomorrow? Anyway, a nice set, i'm still high bidder on the one piece I am going after.

CNG has interesting material yet a very unclear auction marketing strategy. I also bid on a few lots where the listing stated :

    "Closing Date And Time: Jan 02, 2012 at 5:00:00 p.m. ET. "

I was under the impression that I won yet I guess this is not the case. The positive in all this if I indeed will end up not winning, is more available funds to spend at the show.

They are very old school at CNG. I remember bidding in their sales back in the 80's and 90's, get a catalog in the mail, mail in your bid card, in a week or so after the auction ended you would get an invoice if you won, mail in a check and wait another couple of weeks to get your lots.

They may still think this whole internet thing is just a passing fad. The upside was I could always rely on their descriptions and back then they were very conservative on their grading of British stuff. Most everything I bought from them as AU slabbed as 63 and up, and EF's always seemed to grade AU55-58.

No winnings, but no bids either. I did sell one coin there tonight though.

Although I got blown out on most lots I did win one that fell through the cracks. The 1821 Proof 63 Sixpence, although not noted on the holder or mentioned in the description this appears to be the BBITANIAR (with the second B overstruck with an R) error proof, listed as R3 (extremely rare) in ESC. Since I got it for a reasonable price for the regular version (which is an R2) I'll be very happy if it really is the error version.

I paid up for this one but wanted a nice speciman other than a 1929 or 1930 date.

First one I have owned in 65 of this type. image

That is a great looking piece. I have a 65 as well from the same date (maybe even die) but I think yours is more appealing. Congrats:

I decided not to get into the bidding on that 1815 Guadalajara 8R in MS63. Congrats to whoever ended-up with it. For under 3 grand it's a good buy, in my opinion.

I won another tonight; paid more than I hoped. It's an upgrade, so I'll reclaim money once I sell the under-grade. It's the Freibourg 4Fr in 65.

Let's see what Stack's and the bourse give me...

Well I finally won something, it looks like I won the 1770 GB Halfpenny in PF66 at CNG.
  • pruebaspruebas Posts: 4,582 ✭✭✭✭✭
JCM, were you after the Peck-1083 Penny in Heritage?

I won that but had to pay dearly (in my opinion) for the privilege.
  • JCMhoustonJCMhouston Posts: 5,306 ✭✭✭
No, but I was watching it just in case, it's better than the one I already have. It's a lovely coin, I did think the prices were strong. I bid on some of the Vicky proof 1/2d's but when prices got 50% above what I was paying last year I quit on those. I wanted to bid on the 1791 Pattern 6d but the reserve was about 50% more than I thought the coin was worth.

@Z: no, I did not play in CNG.

Jeff did the PF66 half cent have a low estimate or did it go for more than what you expected? It looks like a gorgeous coin.

Hi AZ, long time since I saw you posting. It was a lovely coin, and probably worth it but i bought a couple of VIP proofs in 66 last year for 1K so i just think some of the prices are advancing a little too fast. But it my be that I'm to slow.

That is a QUALITY coin and a nice addition to your collection. At PCGS in BN that is a pop 1/0 coin, not to shabby.

Just got an invoice from CNG for the double taler I wanted! Scarce post death type I had not seen prior in AU-55.

Hey BIDASK that trade$ is stunning - what perfect EA!
    Yummm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I didn't find much as far as jetons at the show, so I moved on to my backup plan - hammered coins. I found several to add to the collection, but I think this is my favorite of the bunch--

Anglo Gallic Edward I denier au leopard (Aquitaine, Bordeaux mint) -

I found that a collector on a budget can do just fine at the NYINC if he digs around enough. image

I viewed all the trade dollars in hand in that auction and I thought it was the best of the bunch. Thanks!

So ended up with 3 coins I really liked in spite of a very dry tour of the bourse. All came from the auctions (I "fed 3 auction houses - CNG, Heritage, and Stacks) and these are their images. Will re-image when I get all in hand.

    1) Austria. 1721 Charles VI Taler - NGC MS-62. Paid dearly for this upgrade but I really like it.

    image

    2) CNG Auction - AUSTRIA, Holy Roman Empire. Ferdinand II. Archduke, 1564-1595. Double Taler. Hall mint. Posthumous issue, struck 1601/4. Moser & Tursky 310/308 (obv./rev.); Davenport 8120. In NGC encapsulation graded AU 55. This is one rare coin type and I got it at a very good price which may make this my purchase of the year.

    image

    3) Stacks - Salzburg 1777-M, NGC MS-65. Upgrade to my MS-61 which I will sell. This is one killer coin in hand which I previewed in the pre show/bidding. Not sure the image got the best of it. Will image and post when received.

Threw in an absentee bid yesterday as I was traveling and won this Maria Theresia Taler from the Kremnitz mint in Hungary.

This are more of a challenge to find in mint state, and I really like the rose color toning to this one as well as the Madonna and Child design on reverse.
