2012 U.S. Mint Star Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Design

What does our esteemed panel think of this year's designs for the 2012 commemorative coins? Are you in or out or on the fence? I like both designs and think I will pull the trigger on them both, but with such a great patriotic design or theme I'm not sure if they will command a significant premium for the future (because of probable high mintages), but who knows? 2012 Commemorative Designs

Oops! I guess I should have been more specific. I meant the Star Spangled Banner designs.

But with a design like that I believe it could become another sub-10,000 mintage coin. image

They should have made that Silver design for the Gold commemorative instead of silver. Or why not do a bi-metallic say like Silver and Gold or Gold and Platinum. Wouldn't that be more interestingimage

  • Not a fan of the reverse side for either the gold or silver coins. IMO, the obverse of the silver coin would look 100x better without the fort in the background. They should've put it on the reverse side.

I agree with that 100%. Personally I hate the reverse on the gold coin, but I'll certainly be a buyer later in the year if sales stay south of 10,000. Otherwise I'll pass on it unless the mint sells them at melt again like they did this last year for a couple of days. I wouldn't count on that though as supposedly the mint will be updating their software this year so their screwball weekly price resets will be a thing of the past at some point.

image It really has come down to the most savvy of collectors when we opt to wait to see what the final mintages will be on any given product. Not that that is a bad thing; just smart to see where to put our hard earned dollars to use in the right way or product. But the flip side of the coin is, (pun intended) it might be beneficial to buy the first strike coins in the first 30 days to possibly ensure a great coin and not collector rejects.

  • IMO the obverse of the silver Star-Spangled Banner Commem is the only winner in the bunch

I agree. The reverses are iffy. The silver dollar obverse is decent.

This obverse has a historic feel to it which is refreshing in modern coins.

The good news is, the use of the clip art was only $1.99! image

On the 5 dollar gold piece there is no mention of what the coin is actually depicting, I am going to assume its the USS Constitution. The mint really needs to put something on that coin so people know what is being commemorated.

The same thing can be said for the silver dollar piece. I know its Fort McHenry, but again, there is no mention of what is being depicted. No mention at all of even the Star Spangled Banner on the reverse.

The gold coin is atrocious. The ships on the obverse look cartoonish. The reverse is too reminiscent of the 2005 "Ocean in View" nickel, except the stripes that are supposed to represent a flag look more like a music staff with too many lines. Another good candidate for sub-10,000 sales. image

I like the obverse of the silver dollar. The reverse isn't great, but at least it looks like a flag.

Whatever happened to the Artistic Infusion Program??? Surely the Mint artists can come up with something more attractive and original.
