    OK, I'm here, y'all.

Before we resume, help me to update the summary at the top of the page.

Who's still waiting on their stuff? Who's shipped stuff but hasn't seen an update above reflecting that?

For those of you who've gotten your stuff, are you happy with it? I wanna make sure we're all good up to this point, and tie up some loose ends.

As you might have deduced from the most recent posts before this one, I got offers from TC71 and illini420 (as well as a third member who I never heard back from when I asked for pictures).

The TC71 vs. illini420 Paperclip showdown was a bit of a toughie for me. TC71 put out what I think to be a reasonably solid trade offer, and provided pictures.

So did illini420. I'd say illini420's offer was more interesting to me personally, but it had an oddball Darkside/exonumia angle to it. I found that appealing, but it also made it a bit of a "wildcard" and I was unsure how it would have gone as a Paperclip item. It would have hit the ball pretty far out into left field.

Not wanting to risk a potential stall, I played it safe and have decided to go with TC71's offer... this time. I'll say this much to illini420, though: hey, feel free to offer that stuff again down the road (with a little something else added to bring it up to the appropriate level we're at), and I'll consider it again. I thought it was a cool offer and who knows, our potential Paperclippers might, too.

Paperclip #11 will be announced once I edit and upload the pictures.

Again, please update me on the shipping status of all pending past trades, and hopefully everybody's happy so far? image

I do need to touch base with various parties to make sure we're caught up and some of the further-back trades were completed and that everybody's happy.

I'm hoping it won't happen, but if somebody should ever prove disappointed with something they got, I'd have to send a partial adjustment via PayPal (since there's no traditional return privelege, per se), and tally that against the proceeds at the end of the year.

But hopefully everybody will be happy. Do please keep me updated.

So now, without further ado, we now come to...

    SWAP NUMBER ELEVEN.

A 2008-S silver USA proof set plus an additional trio of United States silver coins.

    These are:
1910-D Barber quarter AG1957 Washington quarter toned UNC with Type 2 reverse1969-S Kennedy half Proof (40% silver)
The proof set trends $68 on Numismedia. The three silver coins have a combined melt value of $17.46 as of this posting, but are probably worth a tiny bit more than that. Nevertheless, we'll figure them at melt.

This brings the total declared value of this package to $85.46.

Here are the pictures in the (slightly larger) original sizes TC71 gave me:

Who wants this deal I got from "TorinoCobra71"? What will you trade me for it?

Jim- I'll accept your 1877-S PCGS G4 Trade dollar, particularly as I had two people making offers on it even before I knew you'd posted it here! Haha. So that's gonna be a fast swap. Now you see it, now you don't. I'll write it up as Swap Number Twelve and then go and figure out which offer on it will become Swap Number Lucky Thirteen!

I've saved and edited your pictures, now, so if you would, please delete 'em from the post above, or change 'em to links, since they're a little oversized for this thread (at least when viewed in the browsers I have at work and at home).

    Thanks!

Musky1011 steps up to bat with a Trade dollar again!

    SWAP NUMBER TWELVE.

An 1877-S USA Trade dollar, PCGS G4. (Certification # 7046.04/15418917.)

This coin trends $90.00 by both the PCGS Priceguide and Numismedia FMV trends.

    image

Here are Jim's larger photos of the obverse and reverse.

As usual, in our "leapfrog" progression of things, I will request that he hold it for the moment and then ship it to the next trader down the line. That isn't going to take very long, since I already had two offers lined up on this piece before I even knew Jim had posted it here! So Swap #13 (Lucky Thirteen, I hope!) should be posted fairly soon.

Who wants this coin I got from "Musky1011"? What will you trade me for it?

Hm. Never mind that. I know who wants it already. It looks like there's another TC71-versus-illini420 wrestling match in the making. I might go with illini420 this time since I chose TC71 last time. But let me go and review their offers. Stay tuned for Swap Number Thirteen, probably pretty soon.

That last coin went fast, and drew some enthusiasm, I'm delighted to report. (Thanks, Musky!)

I've accepted a trade for it and shall be posting that shortly. The pictures are ready now and I just have to upload them.

We've got another multi-item lot coming up for Swap #13. Stand by.

"Lucky Number Thirteen" brings us comfortably over the $100 value threshold. The Paperclip progress has been good so far, I think.

Everybody having fun? I am. Again, please update me on who's received their stuff and I'll make the summary at the top current.

    SWAP NUMBER THIRTEEN.

Lot of three numismatic items, all silver.

I have been offered a curious and intriguing assortment of items by "illini420" for this deal. It might be a bit out into left field for some of you, as we've got a Darkside/Exonumia aspect here, but this lot covers World, Exonumia, and US Coins, so I thought it was a pretty interesting offer. Different, y'know. And y'all know I like to tread off the beaten path sometimes.

    image

    These items are:

13a: a circa 1870's chain or bracelet made from seven half dimes. There are five Canadian silver "fishscales" (5c pieces) dated 1870, 1871, 1872-H, and 1874-H (x2). The 1874-H coins are somewhat better-date pieces with a mintage of 800,000. Additionally there are two US half dimes dated 1853 (w/arrows) and 18?2 (probably 1872). There's no clasp so this might have once been part of a larger necklace. Mike estimates this small chain at about $40-$50 and I think that's fair. I believe I've seen similar go for around $75 on eBay. I'll figure it at five bucks per coin and thus estimate it at $35 value, which should be conservative enough.

13b: a 1982 Hermes XLII Mardi Gras Silver Doubloon marked ".999" on the edge, and weighing in at 1.1 ounces, according to Mike. Silver is at $35.41 per ounce as I type this, so even if we conservatively call this just one ounce, we've got an easy $35+ in melt value here. Plus, it's cool looking.

And last but not least, a classic US commemorative half.

13c: a 1923-S Monroe Doctrine half dollar grading around XF. Mike figured it at around $30-$35 and said Greysheet bid in XF is $36. I concur with his XF grade and Numismedia says $37 in XF, so I'll estimate this around $35 as well.

I'll declare each third of this deal at $35.00, making the total declared value for the lot $105.00.

If you follow my thought process above, I think you'll agree that this is a reasonable estimate. My declared value is fairly conservative, I think. I could've put a $110-125 total declared value on this lot, but $105.00 should suffice, realistically.

    image

(I'm guessing the 1909 cent in the photo is just there for scale, and have no idea if Mike is including it in the deal or not. If he does, consider it a bonus out of the kindness of his heart.)

Yeah, that's just a worn 1909 VDB I had handy and have been using it to show scale in some of the pics I've done recently. May not be the exact one in the photo, but if the next person to swap wants one, I'll throw in a circulated 1909 VDB cent (worth around $10) image

OK, after letting this die on the vine for what, four or five months, we have Swap #14 coming.

    I'll announce that later.

Wow, I'm gonna have to play catchup ball to make up for the long dormant period. No doubt my year-end stats will have suffered. But so it goes. Life has a way of intruding into one's hobbies, dangit. I blame myself more for being offline than we should the person who put up Swap #13. I don't think it was a dud trade. It was fair. Just maybe a bit too far off the beaten track for some folks. Lesson learned.

So much for the previously-state goal of seeing a small gold coin by the Fourth of July.

Here's the deal. I offered Swap #13 to guitarwes. He's sort of my local coinshop partner, in a way. I sublet my display cases at the downtown antique mall to him- he took over my tiny business. (So it's my fixtures and his coins.) He has agreed to let me go choose an appropriate amount from his stock downtown, just as if we were doing this by mail order. So though I have no idea what the next swap will be, I'll know by the end of the day, and furthermore, it will be in hand and ready to ship to the next person down the line without any additional hang time.

He used to have a gold dollar love token in the case, which was a little under a hundred bucks, but I'm certain it's gone now. I don't think there's any gold downtown, but if there is a tiny gold coin in the case within our budget, I'll scoop it up, and we'll have our goal of gold by July, if not July 4th. Don't hold your breath on that, though. I'll pick what I think is the best possible swap item, just as if I were having several things offered to me via PM, and then Wes will become the trader of record for Swap #14 and of course will be eligible as such for the year-end drawing to split my profits, whatever those turn out to be (if anything).

Hey, this got stalled a long time, but let's not forget I started this with a $1.00 coin, and we're now comfortably above $100.00 trade value, so I'm $99.00 in the black already! It's all good.

    Time for another Bust half.

    SWAP NUMBER FOURTEEN.

An 1830 USA Capped Bust half dollar, VF+, with original grey toning.

This coin trends $94.00 in VF and $168.00 in XF, according to Numismedia FMV trends. It came from guitarwes and his original 2x2 holder had a $108.50 price on it, which I think is fair. So that will be the declared value of this swap.

    image
(Standard notice about the images- they're done on a flatbed scanner, so they're a tad dull and the coin looks a bit better in hand.)

The coin is here and I can ship it immediately upon completion of the swap agreement.

imageNote, however, that I will be on vacation from July 21st through 26th, so there will be a few days there where I'm not online much. I promise not to vanish for four months like I did recently, though- I'll be back soon and might even go online at the hotel once or twice to peek in. If a trade is agreed upon before the 21st, this coin can be headed your way before I head out on vacation.

Who wants this coin I got from "guitarwes"? What will you trade me for it?

Well, we didn't reach the goal of a small gold coin by the Fourth of July, but I've been offered one before July has ended. Someone has stepped up and offered a Mexican 2-peso gold piece. It's probably one of the 1945 restrikes, and if so, judging from the bullion value and what I've seen these offered for elsewhere, I found the offer a bit light. However, I told the person who offered it I would be delighted to trade for it, but he'd just have to sweeten the pot a little, since the object of this trade progression is to advance forward, not backwards.

We'll see what comes of that.

I leave for vacation within the hour, most likely, but will try to check in once or twice if the hotel has WiFi (which it probably does) and the wife brings her little tablet along.

I'd like that. Please do make an offer!

I had an offer of a Mexican restrike 2 peso gold plus a generic circulated Peace dollar for the Bust half still in play, but that seemed a bit light. If nobody offers anything else, I might have to take that just to keep things moving.

I was thinking of shutting this down, sending the last coin to eBay, and splitting the proceeds, but I would much prefer to see it last out the year as originally planned.

My four- or five-month absence earlier seems to have killed the momentum.

By all means, somebody please help get us unstuck!

So, you probably want 1-3 items of high value, as opposed to a bunch of smaller value items, but in the interest of moving this forward ...

I have a large quantity of US proof sets, three rolls of 1996 Kennedy halves ($30, worth face?) and one MS roll of George Washington golden dollar coins ($25 face). Would any combination of those items be satisfactory to move this trade forward?

Well, I had an offer of 3.5 oz of silver in silver rounds, and accepted that for the Bust half in Swap #14, but haven't heard back from the person who offered it. I just sent him a PM. At the time, somebody else had made me an offer (I forget who and what, now) that didn't seem so bad, but that was just a few hours after I'd accepted the silver swap that's now apparently fallen by the wayside. Let me go back in my PM history and see who it was that made the other offer, or if the person who offered the silver will reappear.

We should be unstuck fairly soon, I would hope.

    Thanx, Jinx. PM sent.

I think I will go with a trade that was offered back in July, which for one reason or another (mostly my own flightiness) we haven't gotten round to making official until just now. But hang onto your stuff. Who knows, perhaps we can work it into a future swap, down the line.

Swap #15 will be posted, momentarily.

    SWAP NUMBER FIFTEEN.

After my long absence earlier in the year, and then several weeks of doldrums, it would appear we've gotten unstuck.

More importantly, we've crossed the GOLD threshold!

John Lynn, aka "JaLP", has stepped up with our next offer.

    image

The first coin is a "1945" Mexican 2-pesos gold piece. True, it is rather a tiny gold coin (13 mm), but gold nonetheless! There were 140,000 originals struck in 1945 and another 4,590,493 pieces restruck from 1951-1972, most of them dated 1945. The restrikes were struck to the same standard and contain the same amount of gold (.0482 oz.) as the originals. My 2008 Krause catalog says the restrikes of KM461 (this type) are worth spot price plus 20%. As I type this, gold is worth $1,732.50 an ounce, so the spot price would be $83.51. Spot plus 20% would be $100.21.

    image

But of course the gold coin is not the only thing offered in Swap #15. We have a piece of silver, too.

John said this was a 1922-D Peace dollar in "Fine". I don't see a mintmark in the picture, so it might or might not be a "D" coin, but it's certainly a 1922 Peace dollar. It looks better than just "Fine" to me. I'd call it Very Fine at least. A VF 1922 (or '22-D) Peace dollar is worth $28.00 by the 2012 Redbook. Silver is worth $33.66 as I type this, and a Peace dollar contains .7735 oz., so it's worth about $26.04 at spot price.

    image

If we go by the spot (melt) price of the gold and silver here alone, we've got a trade value of $109.55 here.

This lot offered to me by "JaLP". I have requested he hold them for the moment and then ship 'em to the next trader down the line.

Who wants this pair of coins I got from "JaLP"? What will you trade me for them?

PM@U, Scrapman. Glad to see you reappear. Funny that it was within minutes after I accepted a different offer. Sorry you were laid up. I figured something like that must have happened. If you don't mind, sit on your silver for the moment and perhaps we can rework it into a future swap, once we see what happens with this one. I proceeded with the coins above when I didn't hear back from you. No hard feelings, though. This stuff happens. My long disappearance earlier was proof of that.

Same goes for you, Jinx86. I want to deal with you in a future swap. Just hang on to what you have and who knows, we might tweak the offer around and make it a future trade.

But for now, we've got a small Mexican goldie and a Peace dollar on the table.

    SWAP NUMBER SIXTEEN.

Two rolls of average circulated USA silver "war" nickels. (80 coins.) Total silver bullion weight 4.50 oz. Bullion value for the lot as of 12/23/12 is $134.94, down a bit from when I acquired this swap back in October. (It peaked over $150-ish a few times between then and now.) Sorry for the long hiatus, but my life has been like that.

I must say, despite several multi-month gaps, this little swap game has been a lot of fun and has done pretty well, considering I started the year with a $1.00 item. Now, with the year winding down, this could end up being the finale, or we might squeeze in one or two more swaps, who knows. (I will make an attempt to be around a little more in December than I have been these last few months.)

By the terms of the Paperclip game, when the year runs out, I will cash in the proceeds and split them with one of this year's swap partners (selected by a random drawing). If nobody ends up with this batch of war nickels before the end of the year, I might just split the lot up (one roll for me and one for the winner), rather than auctioning them. We'll see what happens.

Note that I just used a stock image for the picture. The rolls remain unopened and unsearched by me. These coins are in hand and I can ship them from here.

Who wants these coins I got from "ocon4008"? What will you trade me for 'em?

    LM,
Thanks for the fun thread and coin swap. Glad I could participate. Use post #100 to let us know who gets to split the proceeds!

Thanks for the reminder! It is time we had ourselves a drawing, isn't it?

Rather than auctioning the final item and splitting the proceeds, I'll just split the proceeds themselves. Since the final item was two rolls of war nickels, that's easy enough to split right down the middle. I'll get one roll and the winner of the drawing will get the other! Each of us will end up with almost seventy bucks of silver bullion.

So, let's see who wins, shall we?

Firing up the random.org random number generator... the lucky number is...
