At what point does the side project supersede the core collection?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
In this thread, I discussed a side project that I had embarked upon, one that EagleEye correctly guessed (and coincidentally just sold me the penny for it and probably does not even know it!). I have spent a lot of time recently studying and analyzing the various constituents of the 1880 mint set and other side projects, learning the whereabout of some of the tougher coins, and planning the strategy to obtain them.

In short, I have spent significant time and committed not a trivial amount of money on the side projects, such that they are starting to compete with the core collection. As suggested by CCU in the referenced thread, if you are spending enough money (or time) on the side project, it is no longer a side project.

Be wary of side projects!

    Sounds like another Core Collection!

My friend, the late great Collector-Dealer Steve Tanenbaum had over 30 "core" collections. And when I say "core", he wanted to have either the finest & most extensive set in his area, or be among the top few. And he accomplished it in many of his collections, and was working diligently on bringing the other ones up to that self-imposed standard.

I once asked him which collection was his favorite. He thought for a long while. He told me he simply couldn't choose.

When you have to get another SDB for your 'side project,' then perhaps it's starting to become serious. In my case, it's pre-1960 numismatic literature---I need additional shelving.

I normally have a few different things in the works but no longer like to call them side projects. They are more like the front and rear burners on the stove top and rotate... Some become hot while others cool off a bit.

I am duly impressed by the fact that RYK spelled "supersede" correctly! Not many people can spell that word. image

My core project is a box of 25.

My side project(s) are 8 boxes of 20.

Supercede is considered a correct variant, too.

My Jr. High School English teacher would have used the ruler with the metal straightedge to slap the hand of anyone using "supercede". imageimage

I suspect that depends on what the core collection is and how often core collection opportunities present themselves

Side projects seems to be a fair way of describing certain endeavors even though the term "project" seems to imply "work" from where I sit I would rather say "side interests".

    Nice metaphor.
