At what point does the side project supersede the core collection?

In this thread, I discussed a side project that I had embarked upon, one that EagleEye correctly guessed (and coincidentally just sold me the penny for it and probably does not even know it!). I have spent a lot of time recently studying and analyzing the various constituents of the 1880 mint set and other side projects, learning the whereabout of some of the tougher coins, and planning the strategy to obtain them.
In short, I have spent significant time and committed not a trivial amount of money on the side projects, such that they are starting to compete with the core collection. As suggested by CCU in the referenced thread, if you are spending enough money (or time) on the side project, it is no longer a side project.
Be wary of side projects!

I once asked him which collection was his favorite. He thought for a long while. He told me he simply couldn't choose.

My Jr. High School English teacher would have used the ruler with the metal straightedge to slap the hand of anyone using "supercede".

Side projects seems to be a fair way of describing certain endeavors even though the term "project" seems to imply "work" from where I sit I would rather say "side interests".
