At the card store the other day...

a woman was looking at cards on display in those glass counters and she mentioned that her son only prefers to buy single cards and doesn't really spend money on packs anymore.

It made me think for a minute and wonder - Does anyone really buy packs anymore?

Definitely not like the old days at least but if manufacturers are also aware of this, wouldn't that mean that they are probably distributing in smaller numbers which would make them more valuable - kind of how 84 Donruss or 92 Bowman kept there numbers low those years and those sets became hot.

So my question is - Do you guys still buy packs really or spend a little more but buy that single key card you were looking for?

I like to buy junk wax but from the 80's and early 90's - but I do prefer to buy single cards overall.

The only packs I buy are Topps Heritage. Actually that's the only modern I buy.

    "Molon Labe"

  • At my local card shop, every time I go in there is atleast one guy sitting on a stool opening packs like they are going out of style. I am not a new card collector, but I laugh when the guy pulls a $50 card and runs around the shop like a little kid. In one respect I love it, but on the other hand, I laugh as he hands over his credit card and the bill is usually hundreds of dollars. LOL. Even better, he then hands the card to the store owner and says, "Can you please list it on ebay for me?"

Have you been around long enough to see one of our group rips? I'd say people still enjoy opening up packs. image

I don't really buy the new stuff anymore (new meaning newer than 2001). Not much after Ripken's playing years.
  • That is funny.

I thought it would be a good idea to get 2 wax boxes of 92 Bowman (each for $125) and i thought I was gonna get like 4 Mariano's - well I only pulled out 1 from each box. Talk about disappointment. Don't get me wrong either, I was glad I pulled out at least one rather than none but I could of gotten those cards each for around $40 on eBay and saved myself some cash.

Thats sounds like so much fun - we should totally set one up here real soon. Everyone opens up at the same time and then we start posting our finds.

Anyone down. We can get something cheap. Any suggestions?

I just bought some 81 topps baseball rack packs mainly because they're just so cheap. $6.70 per rack pack delivered for 30 year old cards. Can't wait until I get them.

  • It's definitely different for me now then it was when I was a kid. As a kid, if I had $20 in my pocket, I was buying $20 worth of packs with no hesitation. Now, if I've got, say $100 in my pocket, I'll probably be more apt to buy a single card, or make an order on BBCE for the stuff that I was buying as a kid.

I still buy some packs, just not the way I used to.
  • Older legit packs sell very well. As far as modern, it's always best to go for the factory sealed box. Most have guaranteed hits and you're assured it if you go for the box particularly due to pack searching. However, there is some high end modern stuff that have 5 cards in the box, so it's really just a pack.

Wait until after the new year, we usually do one per month. We took a little break for the holidays. Now I have $750 in Fantasy Football winnings burning a hole in my pocket! image

At least you have a local card store left. The only ones around here have slowly vanished. The last one going about a month ago.

Tell me about it. I'm aware of only 2-3 shops left in the entire Dallas/FtWorth area. Luckily one is in Plano near me.

If anyone knows of more, by alls means PM me.
