Former Patriots DT Houston Antwine dies

From the Boston Herald online:

FOXBORO — The New England Patriots say that former defensive tackle Houston Antwine, a six-time American Football League all-star, and his wife have both died. Antwine was 72.

The team said Antwine died in Memphis, Tenn., on Monday of heart failure, and his wife, Evelyn, died Tuesday morning of lung cancer.

A member of the Patriots’ 50th Anniversary Team, Antwine played from 1961-71 with the franchise before spending the 1972 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. In 142 regular-season games for the Patriots, he had 39 sacks, leading the team in that category during the 1967, 1968, and 1969 seasons, although sacks were not an official statistic then.

One of the many men who made the AFL so fun and memorable. I hope he and his wife are at peace.

    RIP Mr & Mrs Antwine.
Antwine was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1961 but was cut before the season and became one of the first defensive stars in the AFL.
