House of Jazz?

Hi everyone! While going through my "oddball" cards I noticed this one and thought I remembered seeing one on eBay. The one on eBay is similar, but has rounded corners and is listed as 1971 House of Jazz. Further investigation hasn't helped. Card is blank backed. What the heck is it?

Anyone.....Bueller?

Thanks in advance. This is the best place to find out about cards.

It's interesting to note the different cropping between the "regular issue" House of Jazz card and yours. The entire baseball shows in your card, but the rounded edge one has more showing on the top and right. I've never seen an uncut sheet of these guys, but it seems possible that's what you've got.

The card stock on House of Jazz cards has Kodak marking on the back and the front surface has a mesh like non-smooth surface. The rounded corners weren't inconsistently cut and a House of Jazz return address label was stuck on the back. There's very few of them out there and what you have was probably never cut up and labelled. These have always been very hard to find.

I recall a big scandal about these when I first got into the hobby about '73- someone had come up with a whole bunch of fakes, or the company was printing them again, or something like that. I'm not saying that is the case on yours, but there was a whole lot of controversy via an article in The Trader Speaks at the time. Perhaps a post on Net 54 will uncover more info.

Are you thinking about the Homogenized Bond cards? I don't recall any controversy over these except for licensing and if a House of Jazz ever actually issued them. If a bunch of fakes were made then those are harder to find than the originals.

About half of the ones I have have the label, half do not, and the rest I'm not sure. image

Nope, it was definitely about House of Jazz. I don't think the controversy over Homogenized Bond Bread cards came up until a decade or so later.

Thanks for the info guys! The front does have a kind of mesh-like surface. The reverse says "This Paper Manufactured by Kodak" but it is so light, you almost can't make it out. No sticker on the back, or residue. So, it could be the real thing. Either way I appreciate the input.

Bob, I did see the one 4SC had up for auction. Mine must be worth millions! Hahahahahahaha This is a first for me, finding a "rare" card and already having it! WoooHoooo!

Funny area on hat where logo is. The original photo was Washington, but TC was later airbrushed in. This one looks like it was made from the TC version.

Happy collecting and Happy New Year!

is it a mesh pattern on the surface, or a mesh texture?
If it's a mesh pattern that would indicate it was a copy of something that had been printed- the mesh is the printing screen of the original. That would indicate this is a reprint of the original. That is how they busted the fake '59 Fleer #68's years ago.

It's definitely something you can feel, not a photographic image. Thanks for asking, now I am actually thinking it might be real! Years ago I worked in a screen printing shop, that makes sense.

I think I picked it up at a card show for little or nothing.

    Makes a guy feel good!
