Realisitic Expectations of this "find"?

so my inlaws were over for christmas and just learned of my card interest. my mother in law said, "i still have my uncles boxes which has some cards and comics in it". as my fork dropped out of my mouth b/c i have been over there place many times (its in CA and i'm in NYC). i inquired a little more:

Uncle died in 1948 or 1949, he collected "things", has "some" cards and comics. I told her to open the box and atleast send me some photos when she goes home as I won't be out there for a few mos. My expectations are very very low, but any guesses of what this uncle's box contains?

Whatever is in there, it will at least be a cool journey back in time. Actually, isn't just about everything we do here about "a cool journey back in time"?? Well, except for the modern freaks in here...image

thanks guys, yep i have had virtually no experience with vintage, even say playball cards, so if theres even a few beat up, creased in half cards in there, they may be enough to get me into collecting it

If you're not into vintage (yet), then I highly recommend that the first time you look at these pics you put yourself back into "little boy" mode. You'll be amazed at the sense of wonder you'll get looking at that stuff whatever it is.

Wow, this is my dream conversation with a family member. I have had this happen with friends and acquaintances that are my age, but an older person would be SO much fun. My experiences with the "hey come check out my old cards" turn out to be 50/50 on the crap scale, but you can't go wrong with old stuff like that! Like everyone else said, it's worth the journey back in time.

Post pics if/when you get them! image

Yup. My thought as well. Prolly some 1990 Score to boot. Would be cool to get some '38 Goudeys or something along those lines though. Needless to say, post those pics when you get 'em.

Sounds like it will be fun to go through. Good luck and let us know.
  • Good luck , sounds great. Hopefully they don't take it down to the local baseball card shop to see if they're worth anything.

Ugh... had this happen to a friend of mine. He mentioned that he had a bunch of baseball cards and stamps from his father's estate (my friend is 60, so it dad was well, older). I told him I would come over and take a look at them, and sell them for him at no charge (he's my friend). The next week I call him and ask if he still wanted me to come over, and he said that he took them to the local card shop and sold them for enough to pay for his upcoming trip to Aruba. Needless to say I was a bit saddened by this. He still let me sell the rest of his dad's estate which was full of old antique clocks, china, figurines and an atlas. I made him over $8k with that stuff alone. It still haunts me thinking about what he took to that card shop.
