Coins to Return or Keep?

Note: Changed topic to comply with Forum Rules.

The following are 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Sets with First Strike. I put questions on the bottom of each picture and am hoping someone knows the answer to them. The Mercanti set below I have an option to exchange, the seller from BST was very kind enough to allow me to do so as long as I paid for shipping costs, which is definitely fine by me =) Thanks!

2011-W Flag Label PCGS MS70

Is that a dent or the plastic holder?

2011-W Flag Label PCGS MS69

image

Can that water looking stain be removed? The orange spot on this one I got lucky, it's on the slab not the coin. Will probably submit this under Guaranteed Resubmission but just wanted to hear feedback if the stain is wipeabe

2011-S Mercanti Label PCGS MS70 Picture 1 OF 2

This looks like a water stain...it's not milk spots is it? If it's water stain or some stain, can I just ask PCGS to clean it off?

2011-S Mercanti Label PCGS MS70 Picture 2 OF 2

I think the side has a lot of scratches...

2011-S Flag Label PCGS MS70 Picture 1 OF 3

image

There's a shiny dot on the edge...not sure if that's a problem or not. I took this also because there's a hair on it lol.

2011-S Flag Label PCGS MS70 Picture 2 OF 3

image

There's a shiny spot on this one. Do you think this would cause a problem? Not sure how it graded 70 with that shiny dot. The shiny dot is viewable with the naked eye as well. This one I can't return = Do you think people on eBay whoever wins this coin will be mad it has the shiny dots?

2011-S Flag Label PCGS MS70 Picture 3 OF 3

Posted this because there's a hair in it lol

2011-P Mercanti PCGS PR70

image

Only flaw on this coin unfortunately. Is viewable without the 40x magnifying glass. Really don't want to exchange it since it's the only flaw so was wondering if shiny dots matter with grading or not. If it does I'll just do the exchange.

2011-P Flag Label PCGS PR70 #1

image

Just a white hair on the sun, can tell because it reflects the line

2011-P Flag Label PCGS PR70 #2

image

I think the same person graded this as the prior one

2011 Flag Label PCGS MS70

image

Too many scratch marks on edge of coin, luckily not viewable through 5x or 10x magnifying glass that well. =)

Summary

Question: Do shiny spots effect grading of the coin?
Question: Can those stains be wiped off with a cloth if I resend them?

I did learn something from this though. I am using too strong of a magnifying lens. I noticed some differences between the 40x and 10x and 5x and naked eye. Thanks btw for the feedback.

    That's pretty amazing...

However due to censorship constraints, this newbie will just say that this will be another reason Mercanti Labels will not do as good as First Strike Flag labels.

Me thinks you are using magnification higher than 5x.

    Yeah using 40x magnification =

BTW bear in mind these are just the ones I have questions on. The rest of my sets are absolutely flawless.

The manufacturer will let you return it? Don't you mean the seller?

One of the hazards of chasing PF-70 and MS-70 coins is that sometimes 70 is not really 70. If you don't like the coins then you certainly should return them. I might recommend that you examine them in person before you add the perfect prize to your collection. Too many coins that need to be returned tends to dampen enthusiasm for your collection (and the sellers' willingness to take your orders). Best of luck to you and I hope you find the 70 of your dreams.

Well for the Mercanti one he was willing to let me exchange. He's actually on the forums, great seller btw. I just wanted to make sure because being a seller myself on eBay I know it's a hassle and I didn't want to hassle him if it's repairable by resending to guaranteed resubmission.

This is just an observation so please take it as such; but at your current level of inspection I would suggest you back away from the purchase MS/PR70 pieces.

I am probably looking at it too harshly huh. I think I need to throw this magnifying glass away and just use the 5x 10x lol. Although I have to say the rest of my coins (I have 3 sets total) were absolutely perfect with no flaws under 40x magnifying glass. Ok thanks for your feedback. I just wanted reassurance that it's ok and that I am indeed looking at it with too strong of a magnifying glass. Can someone confirm to me though that the stains are wipeable?

This is why I dont like 70's, very rarely do i see a true 70, where there is absolutely nothing , but pure te problem free surfaces.

Now techincally , 10x maginfication is the standard on 70 (not 40X) , but I see several of the things you pointed out under 10x magnification on lots of 70's.

give me a nice 69 , and I am happy.

I sold off all of my 25th anniv sets for good money, but retained a Rev pf and s mint in PCGS 69 flag to keep for the long term.

I can find slight imperfections in just about every 70 from PCGS and NGC. I kind of wonder if t's less about perfection but them saying "this coin belongs in the cream of the crop."

The 69s from these sets are VERY nice and are hardly trash.

It does bother me when hair or other stuff finds its way into the slab.

@ 19Lyds: yup! But that's just a hair, I can move it if I shake it gently. I will probably attend a PCGS show and get it taken out though. Other than that, there are no imperfections on any of my 2011-P PR70 First Strike Flag Labels =D

Sorry to ask about but wondering if that water looking "stain" can be removed via taking out of slab and wiping it. Anyone ever had any experience with that? If not, I'll just resubmit and see what happens and post results if anyone is interested. I already have a few coins I submitted for guarantee, waiting on results still. Really don't want to hassle the sellers if it's wipeable.

Had you submitted these coins and gotten PR69 and came here asking why they didnt go 70, those same spots you are being told to ignore would be pointed out to you like you were blind. Send em back.

I have been quite happy buying 69's and saving the cash for the overpriced 70's. There is little difference - unless of course, you get out the electron microscope. Some people pay crazy money for 70's.....

BTW, the 2011w in 69 looks like it has strike doubling to me.

My guess would be no. Stains tend to be very stubborn and often etch the surface. They certainly wouldn't be treated with wiping. A dip, at most.

I would return what you're unhappy with. PCGS can take a very long time on spot reviews -- I've been waiting since August for 8 of them, and there are shipping & insurance costs. (I'm guessing you don't mean resubmissions, as in regrades or crack-outs.)

Drats. I resubmitted a few coins and it cost me about $100.00. If I resubmit the ones I can't return for exchange I may have to spend more on it. =(

I think though we get our money back if it degrades though (which I'm pretty sure those 70s will degrade). I guess that's one good thing...guess I'm not done searching for my sets for the 25th 2011 then. Back to the drawing board! =(

While I think the OP is being way to picky and the grade insurance only applies to stuff you can see in 5X Mag, I feel the TPG's leave themselves open to these kind of complaints by declaring a coin "perfect" and still covering it by their protection. I am sure the business operations folks have done the cost benefit analysis of providing this service but that would drive me crazy if I worked in the claims department.

I bet we could grade discount 50% of the 70 material slabbed...So if your that annoyed, send them back.

Nah not annoyed. I just wanted feedback on what people thought. Really didn't want to return the coins for exchange, I know it's a pain. Was trying to find a reason not to. I guess I'm going to be exchanging them with the seller. =(

Thank you everyone for the help!
