Walt's doing a number my collection of 'prospects!'

The Reds are my favorite team... and after today's official announcement, even more of my collected young prospects were traded away.

I may (or may not) be in the minority, but I think the Reds have completed two lop-sided trades recently... one more massive than the other.
In the past week or so, the Reds have traded away (among others) Y. Alonso, Y. Grandal, B. Boxberger, Travis Wood, and Dave Sappelt......

OUCH man, OUCH!

Well damn... I guess the good news is, now that they don't play for the Reds anymore, they'll start tearing it up with their new teams and their RCs will be collectable elsewhere.

Before 2011, I was never much for collecting 'prospects,' but really enjoyed it having had a chance to watch nearly every Reds game on TV this past season.

What a bummer... this isn't helping my interest! Back to the vets I guess. image

Anybody else get a little disgusted when a player(s) they collect gets traded or jumps ship?.... ala Pujols?

    I feel you Russ.
Last summer the Indians traded away their two best pitching prospects Alex White, and Drew Pomeranz for the overrated Ubaldo Jimenez.
I had a nice little Alex White collection going.

I hear ya, I had a few Alonsos, Grandals, and Sappelts stashed away. I'll throw them in the for sale lot I'm putting together.

such is the folly when a small market team goes all in...and when a small market team with limited financial resources goes all in, it's via trade and Walt had two choices. Trade from within with depth at C/1B, or deal Votto now. The smarter decision would probably have been to deal Votto for a mix of young MLB cost controlled players and prospects, but I'm guessing that would have upset the fanbase much more than these prospects deals. Obviously the Reds feel with the Brewers (in all likelihood) losing Fielder and probably Braun for 50 games, and the Cubs in total rebuild mode, the only competition for the Central is JortsNation. I know most prospect honks loved the deal the Padres received for Latos, but the thing is, Latos is under Reds' control for 3 more years, so unless he breaks down, should the Reds fall out of contention or undergo a rebuild over the next two years, Latos can simply be flipped for a slightly lesser package of prospects than the Reds paid for with the Padres. Even if the Reds keep Latos for 2 years, and he's relatively healthy, he can still be flipped for a Grandal type prospect and a lesser mid tier prospect. So in the end, you'll end up paying for say 2 years of Latos (at a low salary) for one of Yonder Alonso or Grandel. As for the Marshall trade, I suppose that one may be worse if Walt can't work out an extension with Marshall given he's a FA after this season. I probably wouldn't sweat Sappelt much. I can't see him being anything more than a 4th OFer...and the Reds always seem to have a ton of those guys in recent years with Gomes, Dickerson, Heisey, Fred Lewis etc. As for T.Wood, what's his ceiling? Ted Lilly? A solid #3 starter for the last 7 or so years. Right now Wood is a #4 but supposedly developing a cutter so we'll see if he can become a #3 in time. But right now Marshall is a premier set up man (2.8 WAR last season) and considering top FA set up men in MLB earn close to $5M per season (or $12M if your name is Rafael Soriano or K-Rod) such is the cost of doing business. Wood's groundball rate is a not so Great American Ballpark friendly 32% so a flyball pitcher in that yard isn't a very good recipe for success. The real negative is that if Marshall becomes a FA after the season, under the new CBA, relievers won't bring the compensation draft picks that they have in the last few years. So if the Reds can't resign him, the Reds' will receive nothing regarding compensation.

You'll find a majority of collectors usually collect a team or a player. Sure, it's tough to lose the top player in the organization but life goes on and someone else typically takes their place as the best on the team. As far as player collectors, they'll still collect!
