1980 Topps baseball - official PSA thread

StoogeStooge Posts: 4,639 ✭✭✭✭✭
I noticed that there was no official thread for this set when I did a search. My set is currently 14th and so far is a perfect PSA 10 set at 253 cards. There also seems to be a "quietness" to this set, as I hardly see anyone speak of this set, other than when a group rip occurs.

I requested a 1980 Topps - Master set for those of us with the Variations listed. I believe that most of those are the "Yellow Name" variations. Anyone here know of any others???

You can view my modest 1980 topps set from my sig line.

Paul.

edited for spelling.

  • Great start to the set. I am a fan of the 1980 set, but can't help you on the other variations. Looking forward to seeing some 1980 beauties.

I would love to have all of the H.O.F.'s in old slabs (The grade all on 1 line). This card will probably run 8K-9K. I don't think its a 10K card anymore, as 1 was for sale on eBay for that price for a long time and didn't sell. It may have sold since I haven't seen it, but the seller turned down over 2 dozen offers if memory serves.

The 1980 topps was the first set I can remember owning back in the day as a kid. It holds alot of good memories for me.

I've been thinking about starting this set myself, as if I needed another project to thin out my focus.

The 1980 set is smack in the middle of my serious collecting years (78-82), and I have fond memories of the set as well. I am a bit hesitant to start it though, as I would want to collect the set in 10s as well, but getting the Henderson would be literally impossible for me. The AR collecting side of my personality will not allow all 10s and one 9. Or 8.

Just curious: How come you only uploaded scans of the checklists?

<< <i>Just curious: How come you only uploaded scans of the checklists? >>

I am a checklist freak. I think they are severely under appreciated card. Most were tossed and alot were written on so I like to collect them. As far as why do I only have pictures of them, is because there are a few sets listed in the 1980 topps with pix and I have a checklist set listed in the showcase section.

Those are some nice prices. I am looking hard at the #270 Schmidt, but didn't notice the cut. I will look again. I did pick up the #720 old label Yaz for a song. I passed up quite a few to let this Gem go by.

  • Marc - At one point in time, I owned 60% 1980 Topps population in PSA 10. When I finished my 1975 set, there were only 58 PSA 10's available and I owned 15% of them. You are right; how things have changed. At least prices decreased. I look back to what I paid back in the late 90's and early 00's, and it makes me want to cry! Frank

    Hi everyone,
I recently started collecting this set again (mostly in PSA 10). I have been picking the 4SC low hanging fruit 10s from their inventory, but will soon start running into the 'low' pop 10s. I wanted to rekindle this thread as I have always loved this set. I want to talk about the tough low pop stars/commons. What handful of cards do you consider to be the toughest ones to obtain?

I'm also looking to build the yellow name subset in PSA form. If you have any for sale, please let me know, thanks.

  • Mark,

I am toying around with this set a bit as I work on 1981. As I am in early stages, if I get any 10's of interest etc - I will PM you.

Welcome aboard! Always great to see another collector in the mix. If you are mainly looking for 10s, 4SC is a good place to start on their website. They always have specials going on and free shipping over $50 so way better than their ebay listing. I like to set aside $50 every few months and pick up 10s for between $5 and $7 along with any other years of whatever I'm looking for. As for 9s, you can get a lot of those for less than grading costs! Ebay ID mozpez was listing a PSA 9 lot with a pick any 3 for $4.99 and I bought up 21 from him at a little over $2 each after shipping which included a 526 Phillies team (20 or 30 bucks VCP of late I think) and a tough 696 Gonzalez with only nine 9s and one 10. He had a bunch left and even though he hasn't relisted yet I'm sure he'd deal with anybody who asked. Also, ebay ID Bennyboy407 bought a 241 count lot for $381 after shipping which averages out to be about $1.59 each. He had a lot of duplicates but I bet if somebody offered him $2 each he'd be happy to get rid of some. You can see the orginal listing as "1980 topps psa lot" under the completed listings ending on 10/3/12. Coincidentally, Mark, I found a posting under a different thread you made back in January 2006 I will respond to in order to pull it up on the boards. Kind of cool to look at old offers/prices from six plus years ago. Good luck with your set and I will PM you later. Jeff

Thanks for bringing up that auction. I was looking to buy it, but in the description, he tells you about a bunch of cards that are front and back of packs. Ugh.

  • Final price on that 1980 baseball rack box was $730. Wow!! For that kind of money I'd rather take a chance on five or six vending boxes but even those aren't showing up as often as they used to. Good luck to the winner and he should get some gradable material if he decides to rip it.

I have noticed that there hasn't been any pop (1/0) for sale for such a long time. Plus there hasn't been much activity with the PSA set registry for this set.

Are no new cards being graded? I haven't kept track of the pop reports.

Whomever bought that rak pak box.....good luck and I am in the market for those elusive pop 1's. imageimage

  • Hey, Paul! Ebay ID pristine_paper had some lower pop cards up for auction that I think ended on the 3rd but his opening prices were pretty high and he didn't have anything I had to have. He had some pop 2s and 4s with opening bids of $199.99 and since nobody bought them I figured he would relist at a lower price. Maybe he is waiting until after Spring Break. He was asking $299.99 for a Mota HL #3 pop 6 that didn't sell either. Good thing you already have all of your hilights cards, huh?!image

When I purchased that Mota #3, it was a pop 2 and I acquired it for about $90.00. The last one to sell, which I think was a pop 3 at the time before it went to 6, sold for I believe well over $200.

I believe prices are starting to rise on this set. BBCE can't even keep any un-opened inventory, so for those of us that need to compete it, I would say now is the time before it gets out of hand.

  • For anybody looking to pick up some 9s, 4SC has a sale going on for as little as 3.99 each until the 14th. I picked up 13 PSA 10s for 7.99 each for my second set and with over 260 different PSA 9s I have enough to start a 3rd set but I don't know if I want to pursue it. I'm concentrating more on my 1975 set even though I'm not hitting it that hard or heavy right now either. Some of you guys near 50% or above should be able to fill in a few holes if you want.

  • Seeing as I was the last one to post to this thread, I DID actually start and just complete my third 1980 graded set thanks to Mike Eckstine (mstein). My top two sets are both graded 9s and 10s and the only "lesser" card in my third set is the Henderson RC in an 8 for now until I ever get around to upgrading it. The last card I needed was 23 Derrel Thomas which Mike traded me along with his low pop 2 #88 Ken Landreaux in a 10 that went for my number one set. Both are nice "old label" cards--thanks again Mike! I have a bunch of dupes I just posted on the B/S/T board so if you are looking to fill in some holes check there and/or send me a PM. Jeff

Can anybody shed light on the White Pennant variation I have seen on the Junior Kennedy card (#377). Not sure if others exist like this. The top of the position pennant is white, while the rest is pink. I've seen it fully colored in like all the other cards, but was just wondering if there are other cards like this and are they rare (or even considered variations).

A few, like the Pryor and some of the yellow names have been recognized as "variations" by SCD and PSA. Most not. Numerous print defects like these can be found on ebay at any given time with a search for Topps 1980 variations". To me they are just recurring print defects, but I do collect them

1980 Topps Baseball was selling for $300 a wax box on BBCE website about 32-36 months ago, and I was going to buy some and passed. My opinion was it was too high. Now they sell for $1,100. I would look on eBay and every single day a BBCE wrapped box was for sale either at a 7 day auction or for a B.I.N. for a huge sum of money, usually more then $1,100.
The rate at which 4SC's puts out PSA 10's is astounding to say the very least. There are usually if not well over a hundred - 200 PSA 10's for sale at any given time and if you are not in any hurry to complete this set, it can and will be done for chump change.
    EXAMPLE #1:
I was going to pull the trigger on a PSA pop (1/0) #703 Otto Velez that 4SC's had for $179.00, but was going to sleep on it. I woke up to buy it and it was sold. It was a pop 4 when I bought it for $49.99 and now it is a pop 9.
    EXAMPLE #2:
I was offered a #210 Steve Carlton PSA 10 for $399 through an Email and turned it down. It was a pop (2/0). It is now a pop (8/0). I believe I seen 1 selling for around $99.99, but someone here can correct me if I'm wrong.

None of the cards will probably go up in value over time except for maybe 2 cards. The Henderson and Ryan. The Henderson is "way to overrated!" I've seen too many 9's that could be 10's, and given enough time and given enough subs with all the material that is out there it will be a pop 20-25 before too long.

I will have this card for less then $7,500! That is my prediction!

    Later, Paul.

I may be mistaken, but didn't PSA remove the Hit to Win card from the master set? Those insert cards were not part of the 1980 set when it was first produced by Topps. That insert was put in 1980 wax packs that were released late in the year with the "Hit to Win" wrapper variation which Topps continued using for 1981 wax packs. I have a full wax box consisting of packs with the Hit to Win wrapper variation. Does PSA also grade the scratch off insert cards from 1983?

I've been looking for a Carlton PSA 10 to upgrade my Steve Carlton set. I saw one up on EBAY recently; the guy was asking $2600; needless to say it didn't sell and he subsequently removed it. I'd be a buyer if anyone is looking to sell that Carlton PSA 10.
