Help Deciding on Sub's 1952 Bowman Baseball!

Evening,

Debating subbing some recent aquisitions. Here is what I see, tell me if you see differently.

#54 Pierce 7 or 7.5 due to Top Bottom Centering? In Hand it has 8 Corners.

#146 Durocher Can it get a straight 7? 7.5? In hand it has 8 corners.

#118 Murray Straight 8? I believe that PSA doesn't downgrade for the wax on back.

#127 Sisler 5 or 5.5 due to Top/Bottom Centering? In hand has 8 corners.

#116 Burgess has a Top Left corner tiny bump, Can it get a 6?

#168 Preacher Roe has good Lower right corner bump, Can it stioll get a 6? 5.5 or 5?

Thanks Neil

  • #54 Pierce 8oc or 6/6.5 I have many 7's in this set, looks too much OC for 7
    #146 Durocher should get a 7
#118 Murray I would bet a 7 (they say nothing about the stain, but I don't think so)
#127 Sisler 5 or 5.5 due to Top/Bottom Centering (agree)
#116 Burgess has a Top Left corner tiny bump, -- 5
    #168 Preacher Roe -- 5

  • I am pretty sure the Murray is going to get the ST qualifier. I subbed a card recently with less wax on the bax than that and it got the qualifier.

The Roe looks like a PSA 4 from that one corner alone, let alone any other imperfections.

    Just my two cents...

The only one I'd grade is the Durocher.

    Good for you.
  • My personal rule of thumb with old cards is if they look nice grade them. I like to send in all Hall of Fame cards and cards of stars (Someone probably collects them, and will pay for them).

    That said:
    HOF'ERS
    Durocher

Stars that look nice in the scans
    Billy Pierce
    Preacher Roe
    Smokey Burgess

I would imagine getting these graded would only help the value.

Nice cards Neil, that is a set I thought of trying to complete a number of times since they are from the year I was born. I never considered trying to do the Topps set due to $$ but even the Bowman is getting out of my price range now.

I am just going to respond to stains on back.I sent in many 51 bowman football and received a ST qualifier on all that had the smallest of stains. However I picked up a 59 Robin Roberts once that was PSA 7 and the wax stain took up 3/4s of the back.Go Figure.

  • Morning,

Going to try something, somebody is going to remove the stains for me. When I get them back and after I get them graded I'll update.

I didn't know the stains would come off the backs, I've had success removing wax stains from the front of cards using the old nylon treatment. just don't rub to hard

    Nce cards.

I submitted a block of 100 '52 Topps and '53 & '54 Bowman for the October grading special. I couldn't believe how tough they graded this submission. Almost every card was a full grade lower or more than what I expected. Several well centered cards with nice gloss came back as 6s that I thought could possibly be 8s, and received 4s that are a lot better than many 6's in my collection. I know others I've talked with have had similar results recently.

Please let us know what you decide, and if you submit them, post the results.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

If it was me, I'd grade the top 3 (all appear to be at least 7's) and not the bottom 3.
