Would anyone be interested in National Geographic magazines (complete 1974-79 run)?

I'm sure National Geographic occasionally features sports so perhaps this can still count as semi-on topic. image

I just came across (for free) an entire run of National Geographic magazines from 1974-79 and appear to be in excellent condition overall. Would these be worth anything or would I be better off just keeping them? Incidentally, my 7th grade social studies teacher had at least few decades worth of these NG magazines up to the then present (1994-95 school year) in her classroom. image

Don't think you will be able to get much for them.

Two recent ebay sales are as follows:

    All 12 issues from 1977: $13.95 DELIVERED

    All 24 issues from "76 & '77": $16.95 DELIVERED

    Afternoon,

I'd like to know how the hell they do 12 issues of that Mag at $14.00 delivered? I've got a few in my store and I've sold a few, they weigh about a pound each and they do not qualify for Media Mail. I sell mine at $5-$6 each (Free Shipping) and make all of a buck or two on each after shipping. 12 issues is 10-12 Lbs. even Parcel Post that's going to be $11-$12 and Flat Rate will be about the same!

Neil ... I am sure there are many people that use Media Mail that should not! Don't know what method they used, but I believe the 12 issues sold for $2.00 with an $11.95 shipping cost. Wouldn't that fit in a Flat Rate Priority Box? So the guy makes $2.00. Doesn't he have to pay both ebay AND Paypal fees on the entire amount? He LOSES money on the transaction!!!!!

That's precisely what I figured. I knew that the cost of shipping would kill me so unless I could get much more than the shipping cost it probably isn't worth it. Still the price was right for them, right? image And they do seem to have some interesting ads inside (I haven't looked through them closely though).

I sold over 1,200 National Geographic's on ebay 12 years ago. Here is what I can tell you.

    1) the Magazine is not worth selling
    2) People will pay more for the Map Inserts (issued 6 per year) with out the magazine.

Collectors have no problem finding the 1960's to today magazines. BUT, many of the Maps have been lost. The Collectors pay nice money for maps.

    My advice:

    1) Look each magazine up on ebay. See if any are selling for a decent amount (Probably not, but it only takes a couple of minutes)
    2) Keep the Maps
    3) Toss any junk, no value magines.
    4) Either sell the maps or put them in a closet to age.

I went through the 1,200+ I bought (went to a used books store that was going out of business, paid $1 for all). I found a Map from the 1930's, and sold it for $95. The extra maps I sold for $1.50-2.50 each.

    Good luck with your decision.

Maybe you could sell just the pictures of the women from the third world countries running around naked showing their "flawless" breasts??? LMAO image sorry couldn't resist as I think back to my 5th grade days of me and my friends sitting in the library looking at them and giggling!

Ummm, have you heard of Playboy? image

Anyway, it's not just the high shipping. Guess what the biggest problem is regarding sellability? It seems that National Geographic made special hardcover collector's versions of the magazines, where you have about six months worth in a leather hardcover book. So for the true collectors of NG, they'll want those and not care about the regular magazines (especially since the hardcover versions are pretty affordable too). I too always get hardcover books instead of paperback whenever possible for things like Peanuts books and others I want to keep in my "serious" collection. Seriously. image
