Jay Publishing - Expert Question.

Recently another spec showed up in the Mathews Master registry that looked identical to another spec that was already listed. I asked PSA to find composite scans of the other card that was registered, as if it was a double spec listed, it should be combined.

I got an e-mail back this morning with the photo of the other scan from the user that registered it:

Here is theirs:

Here is mine:

I was under the impression that there was only one of these batting variations, but I can almost see what they are saying. If you look at the man behind his back on mine it shows his whole hat, but on the other example, it clearly doesn't. Also, the elbow on theirs isn't fully exposed either.

Was anyone aware of the difference in this Type 2 photo?

  • Yeah, it is just cropped differently. Kinda stupid, but I guess it is a variation...

Yes kind of silly, but they might have been different years.

Killebrew has, I believe, three different variations on one of his J Photos. PSA doesn't even list all the different ones I have. Maybe I'll address it when I get them graded.

It is really strange, and Joe, you do make sense. Judging by what you're saing about the Kilebrew examples, perhaps the cropped photo was printed for another year.

I wish we had a better understanding or reference for when these were all printed. 1962-1966 doesn't quite narrow it down enough when it comes to understanding the why and when for different variations.

I fear that this will become one of those unobtainable pieces in the set, other than the 54 Topps Canadian.

Same thing with the 62-65 Jay Clemente batting with cap. I have 2 variations- one pic is cropped closer- but not on the pop report- never tried to do anything about it. Probably published in different years
Collecting Clemente master (#6) and basic PSA registry sets, Hank Aaron master and basic sets, Mantle oddball issues, 1970's mega decade HOFs, 1967 Topps pin ups, and high grade Topps Clemente and Aaron. Numerous transactions with over 100 board members.
  • The two mathews were issued in different years, they just cropped the photo so it wasnt the same the next year.

One other thing on the batting you can see his full bat, on the close up you can't.

    smtjoy,

I think I got my Mathews pictured above from you. I think I've seen you sell a few others as well. Do you happen to have a line on the "Batting/Close Up" variation raw?

If so, shoot me a PM.

It would, of course, be impossible to authoritatively catalog these cropping variations. To do so would require access to each team's photo pack for each year to allow side-by-side comparisons.
  • I have a new question for those in the know about Jay Publishing. I have seen some people selling photos with the "corners clipped by design". Are there true variations with clipped corners? I looked through some graded exemplars which did not have clipped corners. Could that be a ballpark variety as opposed to mail order? I do believe both clipped and unclipped exemplars I have seen how the city name on them, indicating a Jay Pub vice a team issue....

    any thoughts out there?

    thanks,

I have seen the clipped corner photos lately as well.

I chased every Killebrew variation I could find back in the 1990's and never heard or saw of any with clipped corners. I would seriously doubt their authenticity. If PSA is grading them they should be listed in the "Standard Catalog" or some other hobby reference guide.

PSA has refused to grade several different items I have sent in (not J Publishing) and their explanation is they must be documented somewhere. One item was a 1959 Senators team issue 4x5 of Killebrew.

I know I used to clip corners of things to remove pinholes from when I had stuck them to my wall as a kid
