I'm biased, but 1985 Topps Football is one of my favorite sets ever.
  • what is your objective with the rip?

"what is your objective with the rip? "

that is a wonderful question. i'd say "fun" initially

with a long term goal of maybe completing a set from one of them, preferably in a fairly high grade (atleast for the big cards for each)

    "fun"

Fantastic Answer! i wish more people would rip wax for the sheer pleasure of ripping wax (and not be all concerned about the bucks)

as for completing the set, probably go with the Score. The Score Set is an iconic set with a lot of HOF RC Power.
The '85 Topps Set is also iconic, but because of it's black borders more then it's star rc power.

high grade star power out of the pack is PROBABLY easier from Score (because of Topps' black borders and gum residue out of the pack)

  • Go with the 1989 Score. Alot of HOFers and a great looking set. I have opened some 1985 Topps FB and was kinda bummed with the overall edges and centering.
Looking for 1950 Bowman football PSA 7's

60something less cards in the Score set too, so your set would be a tad easier to complete.
  • Afternoon,

Those recommending the 1989 Score..........................Your Kidding Right? image

Seriously as a Collector whos' opened at least 50-75 1985 Boxes...There is Just nothing form the 70-90's Football Sets like the Black Bordered Beauties.....I mean Nothing, and when you pull that Centered Montana, or Elway, or Moon, or Payton...Well there's almost nothing like it!!!

Damm, I'm going to Buy Me a Box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But that's what makes the 85 set so much fun! The black borders are sensitive to chipping and the centering can be pretty wonky. Putting together a nicely centered, sharp set is no easy feat, but it's not terribly expensive either. You have a nice assortment of HOFers, including RCs of Dent, Moon, and Munchak, second year cards of Marino and Elway, and really nice cards of Montana, LT, Payton, Monk and some others that will get you some decent money in PSA 10.

    interesting discussion here:

85 football which is the redheaded distant cousin of 71 baseball v. the epic HOF rookie power of 89 score.

i'm tempted to say, "both" for me now, but i know thats a baaaaad idea

1989 is a much more exciting rip, IMHO. Much higher quality rookie crop.

    1985 Topps
    HoFer rookies = 3
Warren Moon, Richard Dent, Mike Munchack
    Future HoFer rookies = 0

    1989 Score
    HoFer rookies = 8
Michael Irvin, Rod Woodson, Bruce Matthews, Thurman Thomas, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Troy Aikman
    Future HoFer rookies = 3
Chris Carter, Tim Brown, Steve Atwarter

  • Unopened 1989 Score football is a mystery to me. It sells in box/pack form for so much, yet PSA 10s of HOFer RCs sell for so very little. It seems like a money trap.

For fun-only I would go Score. Looking for a better return on graded cards I would go Topps.

I have busted both over the years and I like 1989 score much better.

    Just my two cents.

    What he said.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • 1985 topps.

It has less rookies, but it also has a gorgeous Montana, 2nd year Elway and Marino, 2nd year Roger Craig, Ronnie Lot, 2nd year Dickerson, and Moon, Dent.

I think it has an underrated mix of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year cards, and some key rookies. Or how about half a box of each, lol.
  • 85 Topps...

    1) Find the boxes, they are getting harder and harder to find.
    2) The black borders really make the card pop

Now the real question... Which set has more players you remember growing up? You have a lot of the end of career guys who careers were ending around that time.. And you get a Payton...

I just think the 89 score is only "Hot" because it was the first year Score made football cards, so it was "new" for the collectors. I would take a 1985 Topps Set over a 1989 Score set any day...

Well, that seems pretty clear. Everyone thinks you should obviously open one, or the other.

    Have fun!

(as someone that has never opened either, my first thought was the 1985 Topps for the great black borders, but I think I've changed my mind...)

Whichever you open, buy the other complete set on ebay. Then you have the best of both worlds.

You could get decent money if you get a PSA 9 from the following Bears:
    Richard Dent
    Walter Payton
    Todd Bell
  • SDavidSDavid Posts: 1,584 ✭✭
    For fun...either.

    For profit...neither.
  • No Contest! 85's for me.

You can buy a nice High grade 89 Score set for less than the price of the box.

Try buying a nice high grade 85 set. They are usually overgraded.

Come to think of it I have an beautiful 89 Score set for sale with a MINT 9 Barry Sanders rookie and the Factory update set!

Come to think of it I also have a killer 85 set I would offer up, but again That isa a much tougher build than the 89.

If you get a nice box of 85s, you won't be disappointed. The gloss on the black is beautiful if you get a good batch. Fingers crossed for you.

If you are a rookie card collector then go with the 89 score. This set might have the most hof rookies of any set from the 80s. If you are into the pop report or looking to hit a high grade and flip it after its slabbed then go with the 85. Personally I would prefer the 89 score but I think you have more upside financially if you psa 10 on a HOFer in the 85.

  • I've built both sets on the registry. Still trying to complete the 85 set, and my 89 Score set won best modern football REgistry award this year (sorry for tootoing my horn)image
For sheer fun, break the 89 Score. 85 Topps is great and I love black bordered sets, but it's hit and miss if you get a good box with nice cards. With 89 Score, you're practically guaranteed to get crisp nice cards with no problems that would be very gradeable. I've opened boxes of 85 Topps were there was not 1 card that would grade a 9. Good luck and let us know what you choose.
