A White Whale on many HOF Auto'd RC lists. Price does not surprise me at all...

All it takes is two potential buyers. There were only 2 people who bid more than $275.00!!!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I think the underbidder may have been Memory Lane. The 1000+ bid occurred before my snipe so my snipe never showed on the bidders list. Yes, it is a white whale for many, just as the 1965 Topps Catfish Hunter seems to be. I thought it had potential to break 600 but certainly not more than 700.

HAHA ... Navarro just started a thread ... HE was the underbidder.
My first comment is technically correct, but it's obvious that several other people thought the card was worth more than $275, as Scott and Barry had higher snipes set that did not get executed because of Mike's.

    << <i>hmm ... why isn't this card in a PSA/DNA holder ... wouldn't it have sold for a lot more? >>

May have added a little. Maybe not. The seller is legit and has a solid rep. If the card was bogus, the seller would honor the results. I think the card pretty much maxed what it would have garnered if it were slabbed.

IMO, it wouldn't have mattered. I would venture that the pool of bidders interested in that card at a certain level have reasonable confidence that the sig is legit. It's a beautiful Stargell sig.

I love that the shipping was listed at $3. For some reason, that amount on a $1k card just cracks me up. Hope he offered insurance!

Wow, I had no idea this card/auto combination was so expensive. Did Willie not sign a lot of his RC cards while he was alive?

I think there are a couple of factors that affect this. First, "back in the day" it was seen so much more that autos on cards were ruining cards. There are still many who feel that way but there is now a huge group of collectors (such as myself) who are into it pretty heavily. Second, the Stargell is a tougher to find high number and makes it a bit more less likely people had them available for him to sign. Although, I do not know how good of a signer Stargell was, there is lots of his stuff out there so i dont think he was overly difficult.

When someone looks at the 1965 Topps Jim Hunter RC, its kind of the same. You'd be very fortunate to find a nice one for under 500. For what ever reason, if there are a lot in collections, they are not made available on the market. And Catfish signed TONS of stuff. There are probably guys sitting on 20 of them LOL

Yes there are and they are smart enough not to flood the market with them. Stargell is the same way, there were dealers who had him sign RC's before he died and the ones I know about are still sitting.

I think in 10 years this will be viewed as a bad investment.

The PSA 8 '55 Parkhurst Maple Leaf Gardens card went for $11,915. Amazing, but then again I don't remember ever seeing another one sell.
