Modern Card Christmas Gift Help

My 11 year old niece is really into Baseball and Baseball Cards. I really only collect vintage and do not know anything about the current modern product available. Looking to pick her up some wax as a gift. What do you guys recommend to pick up for her? Looking to drop between $20-$50 bucks. Blasters are fine. What's decent out there and fun to rip?

Thanks in advance

  • Topps Chrome or Bowman Chrome have had a good mix of color and some big hits come out of retail products.

Topps Chrome is more established players and Bowman Chrome leans more towards prospect players.

If you want to get a wax box, Opening Day is great for a young collector. You get 36 7-card packs for a total of 252 cards, and most of the star players have cards in the set. There are some inserts she would probably enjoy, such as the Spot the Error cards which have the same picture of a player on both sides except for one error you have to find, Mascot inserts, and Stadium Lights inserts which have a textured finish. You can get an autograph, but the odds are long. However, at 11 years old, collecting is more about enjoying cards of players rather than looking for "hits."

If you want to go the blaster route, these are the products I would recommend:

    Topps (any series)
    Topps Chrome

Thanks for the advice guys. If we go Topps Chrome, should I get her Retail or Hobby?

The difference between the two is just the odds of an autograph and the odds on refractors. Each hobby box has 2 autos, while you're not guranteed anything in retail, and the odds on the tougher refractors are better in hobby.

If you just care about the cards, go retail. If you want her to get something cool, go hobby.

Im not sure if your niece is into football but if you can find the retail Topps Chrome 2011 football boxes, they are a good deal. I opened 1 box the other day (7 packs for $20.00) and pulled 10 refractors, not counting inserts. They are drying up quick in the retail stores so good luck.
Looking for 1950 Bowman football PSA 7's
