I wonder what the pop report is on this one...

Meltdown

Some sick & twisted, money wasting part of me want's to send this to PCGS for grading...

CircOnly

Some part of me wants to buy it from you! I love it!

MilkmanDan

Do you know how it ended up like this?

AUandAG

My wag is counterfeit.

My wag is just ugly toning and slight rub. A few weeks in someones pocket maybe.

Meltdown

I assume it was a pocket piece for a time as well, but that hardly explains the dirt? Maybe from a dirt farmer?

I found it in a junk silver bin a couple years ago and really liked the look.

rhedden

Back in the late '80s or 90s, someone took a worn 198X-d dime out of their pocket and submitted it to PCGS. I think it graded AU58 or so. Made it into a few of the numismatic periodicals of the era as a funny story. Someone else is on the same wavelength as you!

Edited to add: I just looked at the Pop. report, and there are a bunch of circ. Roosies of the 1980s graded AU-something.

i see no dirt on it, only patina. silver will eventually turn black if left long enough unprotected. it was a pocket piece for a few years with no other coins rubbing against it. JMO

.
it looks to have the pcgs rubber coin gasket from one of their slabs around it

Mine, too. The reverse lettering looks "off" to me somehow. But I could be wrong. It could just be the way it's highlighted by the toning.

PS- right or wrong, real or fake, I do like the look of it.

It's not counterfeit. There was a women at a bank several years that was going to cash in a circulated Silver Eagle at face value. My father told her that it was silver, yet she want to get rid of it. She sold it to him for face and he gave it to me. Coins like this (i.e. mistreated) do exist.

And how is it you know it is not counterfeit?

of course if it is from a pcgs slab (and the more i look at it the more it does look like it) and it is not a counterfeit, why would it have been removed?
.
do we postulate further?
.

Meltdown

It's not in a slab, That's just a little plastic holder I put it in. I stand corrected, it's not "dirt" but it sure looks dirty...

Swampboy

My ASE pocket piece is very shiny.

I bet that piece had some silver polish or some other substance that was not completely removed.
Then when it sat untouched for a period of time it tarnished that way instead of toning blue, brown, orange etc.

Just a WAG and as for beaming it up to the mother ship for grading all I have to say is

which is why i stated it as such
