My newest addition: 1955 Schaefer Beer sign

I just got this in and thought I would share. I got this off of Net54. I wasn't even aware that this sign existed until a couple of years ago and hadn't been able to afford the couple that came along since then. So when this one popped up I sold some stuff and bought it (and probably overpaid slightly but that's okay). I think the thing that I like the most about the piece is the 3-D effect that the portrait area has.

I realize that it's kind of beat up but it seems to be a fairly rare item. Any ideas as to how to strengthen the borders and keep the cracks from getting worse? My initial thought was to glue popsicle sticks behind the cracks to give it extra support. But I'm not sure if that would hurt the value. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That's a very cool piece! Personally I would probably find someone who could restore the borders since the team picture looks intact and in great shape.

I have always loved this piece. I would either have it professionaly restored or do nothing with it. I think it looks good just as it is. The 3-D effect is way cool!

I'm kind of leaning more toward conservation rather than restoration. I don't mind the tears I just don't want them getting worse. And the Schaefer logo is completely detached so I'd like to find a way to mount it where it's supposed to be without having to glue or tape it.

I'll have to try to get better pics of the 3D aspect of the piece tonight. My phone camera just doesn't do a good job capturing it.

It may be. That's the only other one I've ever seen in person but I didn't pay close attention to it at the time for some reason.

I agree that you should conserve it in its present state rather than restore it. You might be able to put less stress on the borders if you find a shelf and lean the item against the wall rather than hang it on the wall; that way, gravity won't be pulling directly down on the borders.

I DEF won't be hanging it directly on the wall. I'm having a curio cabinet built for my cards and this will either go in that or in a shadow box that I will hang on my wall. I haven't quite decided yet.

those arent tears...arent they they spots where the piece "props up" to look more 3D? lie a child's 3D book that has paper pieces move off the page...

without those "tears" the thing wouldnt move properly....
