Do you think this is autographable? What to use?

I've been admiring this replica Larry O'Brien trophy and have been toying with the idea of buying one to start an autograph project with. However, I've got no experience with getting autographs on metal, and if it's not signable, I don't want it. Seller claims that it's made of brass and other metals, not plastic. It weighs 15 lbs. and is 24 inches tall (same as the real one)

Has anyone gotten anything metallic autographed?? What would be the best thing to have it signed with? Would sharpie wipe right off too easily?

If I end up getting one, I'm either going to get past and future NBA Finals MVP's on it since the inception of the O'Brien trophy in 1984, or this past season's Dallas Mavericks team on it. I haven't decided yet. The Mavs would be very easy to get, whereas the MVP's are not necessarily difficult, but some of them are very pricey (for example, MJ would be about $1200 or so to get this signed through UDA and I don't know if I'd ever feel comfortable paying that much for him). The MVP's since 84 have been Bird, Abdul Jabbar, Magic, Worthy, Dumars, Thomas, Jordan, Olajuwon,Duncan, Shaq, Billups, Wade, Parker, Pierce, Kobe, Nowitzki. Would be a fun project, but don't know if it would be worth the coin that it costs to get it signed. I'm sure some of those guys I could get in person for free, but I almost know the only way I'd get MJ is to pay up. Most of the Mavericks I'm pretty sure I could get here around Dallas and at different events they have.

The main thing though is, I don't want the trophy at all unless it is signable, what are y'alls thoughts on the feasibility of getting graphs on it and whether or not they would wipe right off?

The ink sets a little filming looking compared to regular permanent ink you're probably used to seeing from a standard sharpie. Staedtler lumocolor's are a little filming too, but these are even more filming. Not exactly in texture, just appearance. But they do seem to work on most anything!

  • Hopefully you get a determining answer on your thread...

But I would just simply try and find a piece of metal the same as this and paint it or treat it in the same way that this one is (I hope you can find that information)...

And sit there and sign until you figure out what you like best... A piece of sheet metal and treatment isn't too expensive I'm kind of assuming you wanted the base signed.

    Edit to add:

I personally think sharpie would work just fine, it would EASILY smear until it dries... But once it dries it typically is pretty hard to get out, but I don't think I've seen metal signed with it...

I was debating about going and trying it on something in the kitchen LOL

Am I seeing things? Is that a naked guy on the ball?

That would make a nice piece to have signed if it will stay.
  • I recently had pretty good luck using a oil-based paint pen on a metal truck. I bought a Sharpie brand paint pen at Michael's for about $3.50 and they had every color. I like the idea of a team signed one as that should be faster to complete.
  • Cool idea. I think the paint pen route would be the best one. The problem is going to that it will probably take longer to dry.

On a side note: the Larry O'Brien trophy might be the ugliest trophy in all of sports. LOL
